TIVERTON

MARYVILLE

The seeds for a spiritual kinship were planted a few years ago (June 18, 2003 - July 31, 2003), when our pastor then, The Rev. Jim Dougherty exchanged pulpits with Rev. Alan Taylor of Devon, England. They lived in each other’s homes and did each other's pastoral work plus had the opportunity to spend time with the people and they even managed to get in a little sightseeing! Since that time, a bond of friendship and love between two Christian peoples has developed and matured, separated only by "the pond" (Atlantic Ocean). Last year, a group from Tiverton, Devon, UK, visited with us here in Maryville. They were hosted by members and families of our congregation and together we had a blessed opportunity to get to know each other, to worship together, break bread together and introduce them to the majesty of God's East Tennessee. We had a wonderful time during their stay, so much so, that we hated to see them go home!

But go they did... back to their homes and everyday lives. However, we were pleased to have kept in touch with them over the year, with pictures, emails, letters, phone calls and all types of remembrances of their time here with us. And so it was only fitting that this summer, June 23 – July 7, 2006, a delegation from our congregation and community set out to visit our friends in England, and what a time they had...

The group traveled to London and the Methodist Central Hall. They rode the "London Eye," toured Salisbury Cathedral and Stonehenge, did the round robin, (open air bus from Totnes to Paignton. They took a steam engine train from Paignton to Dartmouth, then a boat from Dartmouth back to Totnes). Their travels also included John Wesley’s New Room in Bristol, a tour of the Dartmoor Prison museum. They went to Morwellham Quay, went to Startford on Avon, and Dartington Crystal Factory. They visited Eden Project and Gwennap Pit where John Wesley preached numerous times. They were hosted at numerous Cream Teas, and even had some free time with their hosts. On our Independence Day, there was an Independence Day program. There was a Farewell Barbeque and communion service. WOW!

Speaking with many of those that attended they say that our friends were excellent hosts and that they had a great time! For those of you that could not attend, the following slideshow presentation tells a continuing story of a lasting friendship and love of Christ that we share. The slideshow is of the pictures that our group took while there...  Take a few minutes to journey with them, and enjoy the warm hospitality, the sights and the endearing friends that we have made.

There are quite a few images that have to load into this slide-

show, so give it a few minutes. It will be well worth the wait
