More About the Easter Season

What a wonderful Easter Season. After the Resurrection, Jesus appeared to many folks in what we now call Post-Resurrection. He also came reminding his followers to share the story. On the day of Pentecost, the original gift of the Holy Spirit is remembered as we celebrate the birthday of the Church. Pentecost falls on May 23rd this year and Broadway will celebrate. Look in this news letter for more information about our celebrations!

As Broadway lives into and out of the Easter Season, we are examining ways that we are part of sharing the story. The Contagious Faith series addresses the questions of faith sharing – What, Why, Who, When, Where & How. As an added bonus, we will also observe Graduating Senior Sunday on May 2nd when our graduates will share their own stories of faith and model Contagious Faith to each of us. You have heard about the small groups. We will have 11 groups meeting Sunday - Friday, including an on-line chat group. If you are able to participate in one of these small group experiences, I believe you will be blessed. If you aren’t, I hope you will find a way to reflect upon and grow in your life response to the words of Contagious Faith.

I pray in these days of Easter that you are renewed by Spring and by our Savior. May you know resurrection in your own lives, relationships and struggles. May you tap into and live out of the Power of the Resurrected God we serve. I pray in these Easter days that Broadway United Methodist Church truly becomes Contagious – with love, with grace, with faith and with the good news that we heard and experienced!

See you Sunday.

                                            Shalom,

If you know of someone who has been omitted, please advise the church office, 982-6192.

Directory Luncheon A Success!

The Congregational Care Committee says a big Thank You to all who attended, and otherwise supported the lunch last Sunday. Over $1200 was raised! We hope to have the directories done within a couple of weeks. Thanks again!

Confused? Don’t Be!

Someone has voiced confusion over food drop-off for the church pantry and for CAN Sunday.

First of all, be assured that ALL food donated goes to those who are without, whether they come to our church to pick it up or whether they go to a food pantry to get it.

There are white containers that are labeled “Brown Food Pantry” in the narthex, in the fellowship hall, and at the Parlor entrance. If you place your food in those containers, it will go to the church food pantry. If we have an abundance of certain food items in our pantry, we take the extra out to the Food Pantry at Alynwick School, where they are open every week day and where they serve over 600 people each week.

Our Sunday for CAN Sunday is going to change. We will now have CAN Sunday on the second Sunday of every month. This will give Judy an opportunity to mention it in the first newsletter of the month and will get us all back on track.

It is still crucial that we give generously on CAN Sunday; our local food pantries cannot survive without our offerings.

Youth Sunday Is Announced

Talent Show Coming Up Soon

May 19 is the date of our annual Talent Show which closes out the season for Wednesday Fellowship Suppers. We’re looking for all kinds of talent, and we know we have a lot of talented people in our congregation. Children, youth, and adults are encouraged to participate. Give Bob and Judy Hayes a call at 984-5149 to be a part of this delightful evening of entertainment. Don’t hesitate to volunteer! We want to see you do your stuff.

Squares Are Needed!

Knitted or crocheted squares, that is! Yes, Bible School is calling all those who knit or crochet to help with a project. We need many squares that the children can sew together into blankets for the needy.

The squares should be 8-inch squares using Hobby Lobby’s “I Love This Yarn”, on size 8 needles or a G or H hook. They can be any color and all colors. The children will sew the squares together into blankets. Yes, that is plural! We want many, many squares so that we can make several blankets.

Bible School starts June 21, so get your needles and hooks out and get busy! What a great feeling we will have to be a part of a blanket for someone who doesn’t have one.

Taizé: A Time for Prayer, Renewal, Reflection and Worship

The Taizé service is based upon the historic Service of the Word with some variations. Singing, silence, scripture and prayer permeate morning, noon and evening prayers. Daily worship at Taizé draws from contemplative roots where silence and reflection are central to worship and cyclical music allows the participants to center their thoughts on prayer.

The service this Sunday, April 25, at 7:00pm is an adaptation of the Taizé service. The liturgy is in English. The service lasts approximately forty-five to fifty minutes. The service is held in the Chapel. The music used in the service was composed for the unique liturgical needs of the Taizé Community by the brothers in the Community and Jacques Berthier, a composer and friend of Taizé who died in 1994. With people coming to this tiny hamlet from around the world, the worship calls for a kind of music that is accessible to these global pilgrims. Through the use of chorales, ostinatos (short, repetitive refrains), acclamations, responses and canons, worshipers with radically diverse liturgical and linguistic backgrounds are able to participate immediately.
