The weekly newsletter of Broadway United Methodist Church

April 22, 2008                                           Volume 4, Number 16

After Four Years
I have been blessed to be the pastor of the Broadway United Methodist Church. These past four years have taught me the value of planning, spontaneity and listening to the leading of God’s spirit. I have enjoyed preaching, teaching and visiting here. However, it seemed right to approach the Staff-Parish Committee with an either designation when it came to staying or returning for another year. After much discussion I decided that moving would be in your best interest, as well as mine.

Margaret and I want to thank you for your kindness, prayers, and thoughtfulness over the last four years. We have encountered many people who truly care about God’s work and how Broadway can be involved. We will be moving the third week of June to Knoxville. We are glad to remain in the area. We pray that Broadway will receive and be blessed by your new pastor. We know the Probst family will be blessed as we were. Thank you for four good years.

                                                In Christ,

Tennessee Wesleyan College Choir Visits
This Sunday, April 27, the Tennessee Wesleyan College Choir, under the direction of Keith Wheeler, will sing for both worship services and will present a concert in the sanctuary at 2:00 p.m.

Tennessee Wesleyan College is one of three United Methodist colleges in the Holston Conference. Located in historic Athens, Tennessee, the school has graduated many young men and women who have become distinguished pastors in our conference. The choir represents students from across campus life, many majoring in areas outside music, but joined in their love and appreciation for music and to its presence in all aspects of life.

In each worship service, the choir will sing selections enhancing our worship experience. In the afternoon concert, they will sing selections from a variety of musical style periods. The choir has sung for churches across the United States and abroad and is recognized as a premier choral organization. You will want to make a special effort to hear these gifted singers as they share their talents in both worship and concert.

At 11:30 a.m. following the 10:30 a.m. worship service, everyone is invited to bring a covered dish and join the choir in an informal luncheon in the W. R. Allen Hall. This is an opportunity to meet and greet our visitors from Tennessee Wesleyan College prior to their 2:00 p.m. concert.

Wisdom Literature Bible Study
Beginning May 4, Bob Ergenbright will lead a bible study based on wisdom literature in the Old and New Testaments. The class will meet for one hour beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the Wesley Fellowship Classroom.

Those interested in studying the books of Job, Proverbs, Song of Songs, Ecclesiastes, Sirach, Wisdom of Solomon, selected Psalms, and much more are encouraged to bring their Bibles, including the Apocrypha, to class for each session. Why are these books included in the bible, and how might we use them as instructional texts for our lives today? Why was this literature needed in biblical
times, and what genres of literature do we use today that echo similar instructions found in these wisdom books? Part of our time will focus on writings outside the biblical canon such as those from Egyptian, Assyrian, Babylonian, and Persian cultures.

The study will include 6 weeks with the Memorial Day weekend off. The last class will be June 15.

Come Share Your Gifts
We would like to have many persons share their talent on Wednesday, May 21, at our Wednesday Fellowship Supper. We are looking for those who are willing to bring displays to be exhibited, or acts that can be preformed. Supper is at 6:00 and the show begins at 6:30 p.m. We did this two years ago and were amazed at the woodwork, art, sculpture, and needlework that we were blessed to see. Several sang, recited, and spoke. Let us make this a great night. Please call the church office with what you would like to do.

With Much Appreciation
To my church family:

There are really no words that can express my gratitude and love for the extreme generosity you have shown me and the Mexico Medical Missions. My heart is full and I am grateful for each and everyone of you that contributed to the mission funds. I promise I will go with God and your prayers and work very hard. I can only pray that everyone could know the love I have found at Broadway.

                                       Your sister in Christ,

                                       Hope Bruce

Kid’s Day At The Woods, May 10
Camp will host a day of fun at camp. This is a great time to visit camp, check out the cabins and meet some of the summer staff. The event is free, but please register by calling the church office.

and Special Auction

On Wednesday, April 30th, you are invited to the UMW 5th Wednesday Evening Dinner for a real treat! Our menu is ham, potato casserole, green beans, cole slaw, bread and assorted desserts. Cost is $6.00 - adults, $4.00 - children and $18.00- families. Reservations need to be in by 10:00 on Tuesday.

Following dinner we will have an auction of themed baskets made by the ladies in the Knit-wits group. Rev. Bob Hayes will be the auctioneer. All proceeds will be used to help the Greg Bradley family with their expenses for their trip to Estonia this summer.

Honor Mother’s Day With Flowers
On Sunday, May 11, we have an opportunity to honor our mothers by purchasing bud vases of carnations in honor or in memory of a loved one. By doing this we will also be honoring the women of Estonia who kept the faith and continued the church underground during World War II and during the Communist occupation.

You may purchase a bud vase of three carnations in honor or in memory of a beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, or friend for the price of $10.
All the carnations will be red because Sunday, May
11, is also Pentecost, the birthday of the Christian church. The vases will be adorned with ribbon and a poem or Bible verse.

How blessed we are to be able to attend such a beautiful church as Broadway United Methodist with its comfortable pews, soft carpet, and restrooms. And what a privilege it is for us to help the Reekula Church in Estonia renew its life through the aid of our missionaries, the Bradleys - all six of them! Their job this summer will be to add on two bathrooms for the church so the parishioners will no longer have to use an outhouse.

Please consider this opportunity to honor your mother and support Broadway’s mission to Estonia. You may fill out the order form in the Sunday bulletin or call the church office, 982-6192, to place your order.

The Mission Committee thanks you for your prayers, your gifts, and your commitment to spreading the word of Jesus Christ at home and abroad.
