“What God Has Done For You”

What have you been created by God to do in this life? Many people today are frustrated and depressed because they are subject to the actions of others. It is one thing to serve, but it is more difficult to be subjected to service. Are you able to practice your free will? The Psalmist asked, “What are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them?” “You have given them dominion over the works of your hands, you have put all things under their feet.” Are you working with God, or selfishly against Him?

All of us want to have the freedom to choose. However, we discover that life is cause and effect. There are some things we have to live with, respond to, or correct to get back to our place of feeling normal. What must we do to claim our place in creation? There are several suggestions made in scripture. Sunday we will honor our graduating seniors and hear from our youth choir. Sunday we will ponder what God has done and is doing on our behalf! Come and receive a blessing.

                                                In Christ,

Youth Sunday Is Coming

Sunday, May 4, will be Youth Sunday. Our fantastic youth group will be helping lead worship at both services. We will also be recognizing our graduating seniors and celebrate the next step of their journey.

ConGRADulations!

Congratulations Charlsea Dulin, Henry Ross and Peyton Paine in your upcoming graduation. We are proud of you!

Scheduled To Sing

The Children’s Choir will sing for both Sunday morning worship services on May 4 and 11. On May 4 they join with the Youth Choir for a celebration of God’s presence in the lives of our youth and children. On May 11 they will sing songs for both Mother’s Day and Pentecost. After the May 11 service they will be off for the summer until they resume rehearsals in August.

CAN Sunday Is This Week

This Sunday, May 4, is CAN Sunday. This is the time each month when we bring non-perishable items to Sunday school and worship for our less fortunate neighbors in Blount County. Items needed include peanut butter, flour, sugar, corn meal, canned vegetables, fruit and meat, shortening, cereal, macaroni and cheese, rice, and paper products. There is also a place on the container in the narthex to place contributions for the Helping Hand Fund. We are still receiving about 20 calls per week for help with utility bills. Please be generous.

Lemonade for Estonia

This Sunday, May 4, the third and fourth graders will be selling lemonade, tea, and cookies after the church services. The money goes toward Becca Bradley’s expenses for her mission trip this summer. Becca is a third grader, and her whole family will represent Broadway on a mission trip to Estonia in July.

Lemonade stands will be set up at each entrance to the church. A bag of cookies or salty mix will be $1. Two drinks will be $1.

Wisdom Literature Bible Study
Beginning May 4, Bob Ergenbright will lead a bible study based on wisdom literature in the Old and New Testaments. The class will meet for one hour beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the Wesley Fellowship Classroom.

Those interested in studying the books of Job, Proverbs, Song of Songs, Ecclesiastes, Sirach, Wisdom of Solomon, selected Psalms, and much more are encouraged to bring their Bibles, including the Apocrypha, to class for each session. Why are these books included in the bible, and how might we use them as instructional texts for our lives today? Why was this literature needed in biblical times, and what genres of literature do we use today that echo similar instructions found in these wisdom books? Part of our time will focus on writings outside the biblical canon such as those from Egyptian, Assyrian, Babylonian, and Persian cultures.

The study will include 6 weeks with the Memorial Day weekend off. The last class will be June 15.

Bud Vases Needed
If you have any florist-type bud vases in your home that you would like to get rid of, please bring them to the church. You may leave them on the stage or in the office. We need more for Mother’s Day. Thank you.

Fund Raising Projects

Due to overlapping in fund raising, the Administrative Board decided that all fund raising projects be brought to the Council on Ministries or the Administrative Board for approval and to be placed on the church calendar as of May 1, 2008.

This will provide better timing and planning for all groups involved.

Announcement

Broadway UMC is one of many churches that is participating in the formation of Family Promise of Blount County. This ministry will provide shelter, meals, and comprehensive support to families without homes, enabling them to achieve sustainable independence. One of the needs of Family Promise is a Day Center where families in the program can have a permanent address, get showers, improve job skills, and space for administrative tasks. A house is needed with at least 800 square feet. We are hoping that this will be either donated or rented for about $200 per month. If you know of a possibility, please contact Nan Taylor (984-8585) or Frank Mason (681-6307). Interested people are invited to the Family Promise meeting on Monday, May 19th at 7:00 p.m. at St. John UMC in Maryville.

Come Share Your Gifts
We would like to have many persons share their talent on Wednesday, May 21, at our Wednesday Fellowship Supper. We are looking for those who are willing to bring displays to be exhibited, or acts that can be preformed. Supper is at 6:00 and the show begins at 6:30 p.m. We did this two years ago and were amazed at the woodwork, art, sculpture, and needlework that we were blessed to see. Several sang, recited, and spoke. Let us make this a great night. Please call the church office with what you would like to do.

Parenting With Love And Logic
Thursday, May 8, at 6:00 p.m., Holly Roe will be leading a workshop on parenting. Holly is a gifted speaker with an important message. She will be speaking on behavior issues with children and ways of responding to them. Cost for this workshop is $5.00 and will be held at the Blount County Library. This is a great event to invite friends and neighbors to. We all need help raising kids and this will be a great resource to help. The event is hosted by children’s ministry directors of several local churches.
