April 6, 2010                                           Volume 2, Number 7

Greetings Easter People

I am so thankful for the gift of Jesus Christ and the Resurrection! Amazing love, Amazing grace, Amazing power... It’s all simply amazing! I was personally challenged, inspired and strengthened in the sermon series on the Lord’s Prayer throughout our Lenten journey. I hope the new insights, intentionality and time together in this study and with this “simple, but not easy” prayer continue to grow and take root in us in each of us. “So be it!”

I’m thankful that Easter is not just a big day of celebration, though it was that! Easter is a season. For the next 50 days (until Pentecost) we will live in the Season of Easter. This is the time when we focus on the power of the resurrection and the transformation that comes because of it. In Holston Conference, we are following the words of the late, great United Methodist evangelist Harry Denman in these days as this year we observe “50 Golden Days of Evangelism.”

You will soon receive (if you haven’t already) a letter to your home. Please take the time to carefully read about Broadway’s plans of how we will be a part of this exciting time in the life of Holston Conference! Mark your calendars now for Sunday, May 23rd - Pentecost Sunday. We will celebrate worship as a combined congregation that day worshiping at 10 a.m. and after worship having a church picnic at Louisville Point Park. We are praying that at that time, there will be some folks who will chose to step out and receive the gift of baptism and enter into a new life of discipleship.

At Broadway we do so many things so very well! This is a passionate, joyful, bold community of faith. I am proud to be a part of Broadway and the pastor here. Focusing in on our understanding of and living out Faith-sharing allows us to take the next step, as a church, into the mission of the United Methodist Church - ‘to make disciples for the transformation of the world!” Won’t you join me?

See you Sunday!

                                            Shalom,

Mission Notes

Helping Hand Statistics for March
Helping Hand provided financial aid for 51 individuals in the month of March totaling about $1000. In addition, two members of the church graciously paid for rooms at a motel for two different individuals on different occasions. We thank them for their generosity.

The Browns’ Food Pantry aided 9 households (a total of 23 people) with food.

The Missions Committee would like to thank those who give so generously toward Helping Hand. You leave it at the communion rail, you drop a check in the mail, you offer it in memory of a departed friend or relative, you quietly put money in someone’s hand or you stop by the office with a gift. Every gift is a jewel!

Solar Stoves for Sudan

Broadway was able to send money to purchase 3 solar stoves at $120 each. What a wonderful gift! If you have gone online to see the kind of stove we purchased, you realize that one stove could possibly help to feed an entire village. When one or two women may be taking care of 20 or more orphaned children as well as their own, a solar stove will have a huge impact on the stability of the family group. Thank you, Broadway, for making a difference in the lives of people you will never know.

Willow, Alaska’s Parcel Post Auction

Thanks to all the Sunday school groups who participated in the Parcel Post Auction in Willow, Alaska. Broadway sent at least 6 or 7 packages to be auctioned off by our missionary, Fran Lynch. The auction itself is a fund-raiser for the Willow Community Food Bank, transportation assistance, and heating fuel. But the auction is much more than that. It gets people out of their homes and socializing during the long dark months of winter. The community is growing, and the outreach of the Methodist Church is growing as well. They are beginning a book mobile program which also provides lunches for school children during the summer months. And they are reaching out to home-schooled children, who are particularly isolated from others their own age. The Parcel Post Auction brings together people who often don’t know each other even though they live in the same community.

New Directory To Be Out Soon
Over the next few weeks the proposed directory will be floating around, and we need you to look thru it for additions and changes. We’re particularly interested in gathering all birthdays (month and day) and anniversaries. Also, we’d like to include your cell numbers and email addresses, if you’d like to share them. We’d like the directory to be as complete as possible when it comes out in May. If you did not have a picture made and would like to have one now contact Ron Pyron, 977-6738.

With Much Appreciation

Dear Broadway UMC Congregation:

The 2010 Mexico Medical Mission Team would like to thank you for the love and prayerful support of Lisa and the entire team. By sharing your equipment with Lisa more funds could be used for the mission. We are always grateful for the love and support by family and friends. This allows each of us to focus on the real mission not only the medical needs but the sharing of God’s love to others. May each of you be richly blessed for all you are doing for Christ.

                                                 Loving Christ,

                                                 The Team

Wow!!! What a Party!!!
How can we adequately thank you Broadway for the good wishes and surprises this past Sunday? (3/21) It was one of the most memorable days of our lives. Thanks for the very generous gift to the Food Connection, the plaques, pancake flipper and messages. But most of all for LOVING us and encouraging us on our Christian Journey.

                                      Love,

                                      Tom & Mary Louise Brown

Thank You Broadway

I would like send a heartfelt thank you to the Broadway Church family for their gift card in recognition of my graduation from Harvard Divinity School. Even when I was on the other side of the globe, I knew that I had an amazing church family praying for me and supporting me along the way. Thanks again and God bless!

                                                    Best,

                                                    Wilson Paine

Thank You

Dear Friends,
Thank you for all the calls, cards, emails, visits and prayers you sent for Richard during his recent time in the hospital. We are thankful and blessed to be part of such a caring church family.

                                       Richard and Barbara Bailey

United Methodist Men Honor
Elizabeth Mize
The UMM donated $500 towards the printing costs of the new directory, and they did so to honor Elizabeth Mize, for all the many months she has worked to get this project accomplished. It’s been a challenge to try to deal with the Cleveland, TN company, when they did not return phone calls, and made many unkept promises. Elizabeth was gracious and persistent through it all, and we appreciate her efforts in getting this needed directory published.

Bill Landry To Speak
Bill Landry known as “The Voice” of the Heartland Series for 25 years on WBIR the NBC Affiliate in Knoxville will be speaking at the Capitol Theater in Downtown Maryville to support the Downtown Maryville Association.

Broadway UMC is a part of Maryville’s Downtown Association, and I’m excited to be in the midst of this group who are striving to promote, strengthen, preserve and grow our “Historic Downtown.” This group does several fund-raisers a year. At our meeting this month we learned that there are about 20 tickets left, for this event. So if you are interested in being a part of this special night, I encourage you to purchase tickets for this worthwhile community event. April - Allergies

“I am in pain and distress; may your salvation, O God, protect me.” Psalm 69:29 NIV

Allergies are unusual, irritating, and potentially dangerous reactions of the immune system to a normally harmless substance. These reactions occur in about one out of every three people. They will attack the respiratory tract, digestive trace, or entire body, but the type and severity of the reaction will depend on the individual’s level of sensitivity to the offending substance.

There are three categories of allergic reactions. Mild reactions are localized and include a rash, watery or itchy eyes, and congestion. Moderate reactions can spread beyond the original site of irritation and cause severe itching and difficulty breathing. The worst reaction, anaphylaxis, affects the whole body and is rare but life-threatening. Within minutes severe swelling will make breathing and swallowing difficult, and may include abdominal pain, vomiting, and mental confusion. Persons severely allergic to bees, shellfish, or peanuts should carry a dose of epinephrine to quickly reverse this reaction.

Since allergies can’t be cured, it is important to determine and avoid the triggers for allergic reactions. Triggers can be environmental (wind, pollen, poison ivy, pollution), chemical (perfume, smoke, cleaning materials, latex rubber, medications), or foods (shellfish, peanuts, wheat, milk, soy, strawberries, eggs). In addition do not overlook items from the surroundings like animals, mold, bee stings, or dust.

Whether an allergy is diagnosed through the medical testing of a physician or the detective process of an individual, finding the source of the allergy is like solving a mystery. Be observant to symptoms and the activities leading up to them. Look for connections between a reaction and any changes in diet, environment, or product use. Also consider others and eliminate bringing potential triggers into public venues whenever possible. Through process of elimination, irritants can be discovered and reactions prevented.
