“Are You Called?”
A pastor friend of mine used to say he could tell the difference between those persons who were called to a vocation, and those who were just putting in their time and being tolerant of the tasks at hand. The one who is called treats the job and the interaction with respect, while the other can’t wait to be doing something else. When God calls us we may not like the task we have been given, but we know that God has equipped us for the journey. He is looking for us to be faithful. He expects us to represent His presence to a world in need.

Are you called? Is your relationship with God filled with purpose? Are you living in harmony with God or merely for yourself? These questions will be addressed as we look at the life of Jesus. He was called and He gave God an answer. Is what you do in accordance with God’s call to you? See you Sunday.

                                               In Christ,

for August

Our plans are final for the August Odyssey trip. We will leave the church at 9:00 a.m., Thursday, August 30, and travel to Greeneville, TN. Ron Matthews will be our tour guide for the day. We will have lunch at the Olde Farmhouse Restaurant in Greeneville, then stop at a Mennonite store on our way home. They have lots of spices and nuts in bulk at very reasonable prices, fresh baked breads and lots of other things. Each person will order from the menu and pay for their own lunch. We will collect money for gas when we return. Please sign up in the church office by Tuesday, August 28.

Time To Think About The Budget
The Finance Committee will begin the process of developing a budget for the church for 2008 shortly. All committee chairs need to have their proposed 2008 budget into the church office by Friday, September 7.

Would You Like To Serve?
The Lay Leadership Committee of the Broadway United Methodist Church would like to invite you to express your interest in serving on a Ministry Administrative Team or a Ministry Action Team. We are in the process of nominating. Would you like to serve on Finance, Trustees, Staff-Parish, or Lay Leadership? Would you like to serve on Worship, Family Life, Children or Youth, Missions or Bereavement? We need help, we need you. If you are interested in serving please contact one of the Lay Leadership Committee members. They are Larry Martin, Kim Norman, Lyn Guerdat, Angie Kizer, Mary Louise Brown, Maxine Redwine, Al McBride, Jennifer Barnett, Barbara Tiller, or Dan Moore. Your interest in sharing ideas and being available to ministry action meetings is very important. Please tell someone you want to serve.

Epworth Bells Plan Activities
If you would like to learn to ring bells in a large ensemble with about 12 ringers and ring praise to God through this energetic experience, contact Bob Ergenbright at the church office or talk with one of the current ringers. You will enjoy the ringing fun and dedication. Epworth Bells meet at 7:30pm every Tuesday.

Wesley Ringers Begin Rehearsals
A smaller group of ringers, the Wesley Ringers rehearsals begin Thursday, August 23, at 4:00pm in the Handbell Room on the fifth elevator level. These ringers dedicate themselves to learning to ring in ensemble style with each ringer playing several bells. It is fun and rewarding. To join this group, talk with Bob Ergenbright or call him at the church office.

Children’s Choir Begins After Labor Day  The Children’s Choir will begin rehearsals at 3:30pm on Wednesday, September 5. This year the children will prepare for special presentations during the Foothills Fall Festival and the Christmas season. The choir is open to children in first through fourth grades. They will also learn about the elements of worship and how music has helped shape our relationship with God.

New Handbell Choir Begins
Beginning September 5 at 4:00pm, a new handbell ensemble for third through sixth graders will begin. The group will learn the basics of bell ringing and play for worship. No prior experience with handbells is required. This is an introductory ensemble dedicated to learning the basics of bell ringing and its application to worship.

With Much Appreciation
Dear Friends, Thanks to all who helped prepare food for the Hispanic Ministries pavilion celebration. The food, fellowship, and new pavilion were all wonderful! We had around 150 people attend our event, and all were happily full following supper! We appreciate the support the membership at Broadway has offered the Hispanic Ministry, and invite you to come visit our worship site to see the meaningful work being done there.

We Need Your  HELP  Saturday, August 25, is the Maryville District Day of Discipleship training event, Living as Faith-Full United Methodists. We invite you to come to one of the many wonderful workshops offered and join in a communion service following. In addition, the district has requested that BUMC help man the registration table in the morning. I need one more volunteer so that we can meet our obligation. The volunteer would help with registration beginning at 8:15 a.m. at Maryville First UMC. Following registration, the volunteer is free to attend a workshop. Please call me if you can help. Margaret Moore has graciously offered to be a co-volunteer. I can be reached at 964-3101 or 983-1894. Thank you so much for your help. Julie Hays

College Ministry Info Needed!
If your child will be in college this year (any level) we would like to bless them with small gifts or cards through the year. So often it is hard for these young adults to adjust to college life, especially for those who are far from home. We want all of our college-aged students to know that Broadway loves them and continues to think and pray about them while they are away. Please send the name of your student, their school mailing address, e-mail and birthday to Lori Wade at topside4@aol.com or you may call her at 984-3693

Sign-Up For Supper Club
It’s that time of year again - it’s time to sign up for Broadway’s Supper Club. This is an adults only group for singles or couples who meet once a month in someone’s home for brunch, lunch or dinner or at a restaurant -whatever works best for your group. It’s a wonderful way to make new friends and get to know other members of our Broadway family. We will have sign up sheets in the bulletin this Sunday. Everyone who signs up is invited to come and meet your group at a potluck dinner at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 22nd. You will be seated with your group to get acquainted and plan your get-togethers. Looking forward to seeing everyone with covered dishes and calendars in hand on 8/22. If you have any questions, please call Debbie Taylor at 983-8221 or Barbara Tiller at 981-9006.

Policy and Procedure Committee Update
The Policy and Procedure Revision Committee is currently nearing its first final draft. If you have been contacted to update your area’s information in the current Policy and Procedure Manual and have not finished, please turn in the revisions to one of the committee members or the church office. The draft editing meeting is Sunday, August 26, at 2:00pm at which time we will collate the draft to present to the Council on Ministries in September. The committee would like for this draft to be as complete as possible.

It’s Time To Register For Sterchi Lodge
For those of you that remember Sterchi Lodge - it’s back. For those of you that have never been - WOW! The Family Life Committee has planned a retreat for October 26-28, 2007. The cost is $10 a person or $25 a family. This cost covers 2 nights lodging; breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday. WHAT A DEAL!

The format for the weekend will be very open. There is some great hiking in the area, lots of games to play and rocking chairs to be used. We will close Sunday morning with a short devotional service. We will leave the church parking lot at 6:00 Friday evening. After you sign up and bring your money to the church office, you will receive more information. DEADLINE IS FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2007. Any questions?
