“Open
Hearts”
There were those in Jesus’ day who truly wanted to “trip
Him up” by asking convoluted and impossible questions. You know, stuff
like, “How high is up?” and, if God can do everything, “can He make a
rock so heavy that He couldn’t even pick it up?” Here, they were asking
about a woman who had seven husbands from the same family, but bore no
children. Whose wife would she be in the hereafter? This was a pointed
question, because the ones who were doing the asking did not believe in
resurrection. Jesus used the question as an opening to question their
souls. He used the question as an opening for the Spirit of God.
Sunday, we will seek God’s presence by looking at how Jesus answered
questions. Jesus knew that our relationship with God was what is
paramount in living. Do you feel and know God’s presence? Do you know
the joy of a resurrected life? Sunday, we will witness the Love of God
in Christ Jesus. Come and receive a blessing.
In Christ,

Ed
Sooter Sings Sunday
This Sunday Ed Sooter will sing and lead
congregational singing while Mr. and Mrs. Ergenbright are away
celebrating their fortieth wedding anniversary.
Wednesday Fellowship Supper Begins with a
Bang! This Wednesday, September 5, come to
the first Wednesday Fellowship Supper and enjoy sounds of the West. In
addition to fun and fellowship, we will be entertained by the Sisters of
the Silver Sage. These three ladies have a sound that will leave you
breathless. They have been compared to the Sons of the Pioneers. You
will love the velvet sounds of the sisters as they sing the songs of the
romantic and untamed West. They will leave you holding your breath and
yearning for more! This group has been featured on the main stage during
the Foothills Fall Festival and was voted the number one favorite
entertainers by the Maryville-Alcoa Daily Times. In addition they were
one of the top five finalists in the Will Rogers Award Show at the
Garland Theatre in Garland, Texas, this past August 7 where they won the
categories of Western Group/Duo of the Year, Western Album of the Year,
and Western Song of the Year. Come one; come all. Bring your friends and
neighbors. Bring your children and youth. Everyone will have a ball!
Menu: Rolled beef, potato au gratin, green beans, tossed salad, rolls,
chocolate cake and chicken nuggets for the children. Cost: adult -
$6.00; children - $4.00; family - $18.00. Reservations must be in by
10:00AM Tuesday.
Office Closed, September 3, 2007
Emory and Henry Concert Choir Is Coming!
Mark you calendars now! The Emory and Henry
College Concert Choir will present a concert of choral music and jazz
brass sounds on Sunday, October 28, at 4:00pm in our sanctuary. The BUMC
Chancel Choir will join them for two selections and the closing song.
You will not want to miss this wonderful opportunity to hear one of the
premier choirs in the Southeast. You will hear more about them later.
BUMC
Hosts MC Community Chorus This year, while
Maryville College is constructing the new Arts and Culture Center, the
classes and services offered by the College in the former Fine Arts
Center and Wilson Chapel will need new homes. Broadway is pleased to
host the Community Chorus, directed by Stacey Wilner, for rehearsals
every Tuesday night, 7:00pm-9:00pm, in the sanctuary beginning on
September 4. Any member of the community is welcome to the choir which
will present its Christmas concert at the First Baptist Church in
December. This is an important indication of the cooperation between
Maryville College and the greater Blount County community. Welcome
singers, one and all.

Fast Approaches
Begin thinking about ways you would like to participate
in Broadway’s time during the Foothills Fall Festival, October 12-14. We
will need lots of volunteers to provide hospitality services at the
church during the festival. The parking lot will be filled with
entertainment and a display by 10,000 Villages, a cooperative effort
between Broadway and the Blount County Ecumenical Council. Plan now to
volunteer for this great weekend of fun, entertainment, and outreach.

Christmas Orchestra Support

During Advent the Chancel Choir will incorporate Bach’s
Cantata 142, To Us a Child Is Born, as an integral part of worship on December
16. This work is scored for full strings, flute, and oboe. Whenever we present
special music with added instruments, the only means of obtaining a core of
string players is through donations. If you would like to help defray the cost
of this exciting Christmas service, you may contribute through the Choir
Memorial Fund. All monies from this fund are used to support special music
opportunities not included in the regular church budget, a policy established by
the Finance Committee.
With Much Appreciation
I
would like to thank all of you who helped with the annual birthday party for the
residents of the Health Care Center at Asbury Place. A special thanks to Judy
Hayes who coordinated the event and to the Knit-wits for making lap robes. It is
always a special afternoon for the residents.
I would also like to thank you for the many cards, phone calls, prayers and food
which have been bestowed upon us during my recovery from my recent fall. It is
great being part of such a caring church.

Broadway’s Website
If you haven’t happened upon our church website lately,
you are in for an informational revival! The website is packed full of ministry
information and things that you can use to tell others about Christ and about
serving Him with us, here at Broadway.
The Broadway Messenger is published on the site usually early Tuesday
afternoons, or by Wednesday morning. Whatever forms, or articles are circulated
at church in the bulletin, via the various ministries and groups, or in the
newsletter, chances are, you will find the same forms with easy submittal right
from the comforts of your home, on the website.
Various selections of Dan’s weekly message can be found there and you have the
opportunity to share his message with your friends and neighbors. If you haven’t
seen it lately, take the website out for a spin...you’ll be pleasantly
surprised...And while you’re at it, share a link with a friend! You can find us
on the web at www.broadwayumc.net.
If anyone has any suggestions for the site, or would like something specific
added to their ministry’s offerings on the site, contact Stan Turner through the
church office.

Hispanic
Ministry Offering Set
In an effort to offer continuing support to the Holston
Conference’s Hispanic ministry, the Maryville District has asked each
church to take a special offering during the month of September.
Broadway has been working with the Hispanic church in Madisonville to
make improvements to the church and the grounds - the Youth built a
deck, the UMM built a wheelchair ramp, several folks worked on a
pavilion near the church while Hope Bruce and Julie Hays provided food
and interpreting services. We have set the date for our special offering
for Sunday, September 9th. Please mark your contribution “Hispanic
Ministry” and drop it into the collection plate on 9/9. We will also
have a container available in the Narthex for cash donations. Thank you
for all you do to support the missions ministry of our church.
CAN
Sunday Is This Week
This Sunday, September 2, is CAN Sunday. This is the time
each month when we bring non-perishable items to Sunday school and
worship to share with those less fortunate in Blount County. The
Cornerstone Youth have accepted the responsibility of transporting the
items to either the Blount County Food Pantry or the Food Connection.
Items needed include peanut butter, canned vegetables and fruits, flour,
sugar, corn meal, cereal, shortening, boxed macaroni and cheese, and
canned meats.
Last
Chance For 2008 Budget
The Finance Committee will begin the process of developing a budget for
the church for 2008 shortly. All committee chairs need to have their
proposed 2008 budget into the church office by Friday, September 7.
Info
Needed!
If your child will be in college this year (any level) we would like to
bless them with small gifts or cards through the year. So often it is
hard for these young adults to adjust to college life, especially for
those who are far from home. We want all of our college-aged students to
know that Broadway loves them and continues to think and pray about them
while they are away. CLICK HERE to provide
us with the name of your student, their school mailing address, e-mail
and birthday. Further, for more information, you can contact Lori Wade
either via email,

on a Chrysalis flight this upcoming weekend. This is truly an awesome
experience. Please keep them in your prayers as God’s truth and love is
revealed to them in amazing ways.
Disciple Bible Studies To Begin
Rev. Dan Moore will teach either Disciple III:
REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE or Disciple IV: UNDER THE TREE OF LIFE beginning in
September on Thursday nights. Disciple III, a 32 week study, focuses on
the prophets and the letters of Paul and the themes concerning the call
to remember, the call to repentance, the need for renewed vision (eyes
to see, ears to hear), and the place of community. Disciple IV, a 32
week study, concentrates on the writings of the Old Testament and the
non-Paul letters and Revelation in the New Testament. Present though the
entire study is the sense of living toward completion, toward the climax
of the message and the promise, extravagantly pictured in the
Revelation. If you are interested in a long term class this year,
contact Rev. Moore at the church office.
Bob Ergenbright will teach three short term Bible studies throughout the
year. The first study is a Disciple produced look at the book of
Genesis. This study approaches the Book of Genesis not simply as a story
of the beginning but as a story of beginnings from start to finish. The
10 week study begins September 9 at 6:00pm. The second study is based on
Paul’s letter to the Romans. The aim of this study is to invite us into
conversation around several key themes: (1) Paul’s emphasis on communal
salvation; (2) the centrality of God’s righteousness; and (3) the
relationship between Jews and Gentiles and the relationship of both to
God. The study begins January 13, 2008. The third study searches the
areas of the Bible loosely entitled Wisdom literature and includes
literature found in the pseudepigrapha, writings outside the Biblical
canon. The class will look at themes, literary form, and writings’
content. As each session unfolds, a clearer view of the ancient world
emerges and correlations between old and new become more evident. The 6
week study begins April 13, 2008. Each of these three studies stands on
its own merit. They are not interconnected. For more information,
contact Bob Ergenbright through the church office.
