“The
Great Physician”
At some time in our lives the normal patterns of living
are going to be interrupted. You will experience an illness caused by
disease, or have an accident that will cause you to make adjustments.
Sunday we will look at God’s desire to make us whole. What does it mean
to be healed? What does it mean to live up to your full capacity? Too
often we get in the way of our healing. We think we can do everything on
our own, but we realize we need the power of God.
Sunday we will look at Paul’s thorn. He realized he had to live with it
as a reminder of God’s claim upon him. Do you realize your dependence
upon the One who made you and put you here for a purpose? Sunday we will
look at healing, and being made whole. Please come and be with us. We
hope to see you Sunday.
In Christ,

Sign-Up
For Supper Club
It’s that time of year again - it’s time to sign up for
Broadway’s Supper Club. This is an adults only group for singles or couples who
meet once a month in someone’s home for brunch, lunch or dinner or at a
restaurant -whatever works best for your group. It’s a wonderful way to make new
friends and get to know other members of our Broadway family. We will have sign
up sheets in the bulletin on August 12 and 19. Everyone who signs up is invited
to come and meet your group at a potluck dinner at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday,
August 22nd. You will be seated with your group to get acquainted and plan your
get-togethers. Looking forward to seeing everyone with covered dishes and
calendars in hand on 8/22. If you have any questions, please call Debbie Taylor
at 983-8221 or Barbara Tiller at 981-9006.
FRINS To Hold Organizational Meeting
FRINS (Friends, Recreation, Inspiration, Service)
will have their organizational meeting at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 15, in
the W. R. Allen Hall.
FRINS is a service group that is open to all members and friends of Broadway.
They meet at 10:00 a.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays, September through
May to make items to be taken to our members in the nursing homes and assisted
living facilities in Blount County at different times of the year. They have a
covered dish lunch and finish the day with a devotion. You don’t have to be
“crafty” to attend. We have several other projects which we work on, too.

Chancel Choir:
Rehearsals are every Wednesday, 7:30pm-9:00pm, in the choir room on the
fourth elevator level. A love of music, a desire to share in worship, an
interest in learning to work as a team, and a dedication to serving a
risen Savior are the only requirements for membership. The choir is open
to adults and Senior High youth, rehearses every Wednesday evening, and
sings regularly at the Sunday 10:30am worship service.
Children’s Choir:
Since the children are returning to school this week and
need to settle into their new routines, children’s choir will begin
September 5. Watch the Messenger for more details. They will rehearse on
Wednesday afternoons.
Epworth Bells: This is a 5 octave handbell
ensemble dedicated to ringing for worship once a month. New bell ringers
are always welcome to join this group. If you would like to learn to
ring bells, join and ring with veteran, dedicated ringers. Rehearsals
are every Tuesday evening, 7:30pm to 8:30pm, in the Handbell Room on the
fifth elevator level.
Wesley Ringers: Ringing as a smaller
ensemble, this group rehearses Thursdays, 4:00pm-5:00pm, in the handbell
room on the fifth elevator level. Rehearsals begin August 23. This is a
good entry level group to join and learn to ring bells. They ring for
worship during the year.
For information on these opportunities or about the music program in
general, contact Bob Ergenbright at 982-6192 or at
music@broadwayumc.net.
DISCIPLE Bible Study Interest Survey
find a survey asking for your interest in the DISCIPLE Bible Study
series. The various studies are listed on the survey with options for
days and time preferences. If you are interested, please fill out the
form and return it to the church office or put it in the offering plate
on Sunday morning.
The DISCIPLE Bible Study program is designed to develop strong local
churches through the in-depth study of Scripture. Through DISCIPLE,
persons are strengthened in their faith and guided into service and
ministry. Please join us as we study together to discern God’s call in
our lives as we encounter and respond to His Word.
DISCIPLE I is a survey of the Bible in which participants read and study
80% of the Word. To take DISCIPLE II, III, or IV, you must have first
taken this course. Disciple II is an in-depth study of Genesis and
Exodus from the Old Testament and Luke and Acts from the New Testament.
Disciple III focuses on the prophets of the Old Testament and the
Pauline letters from the New Testament. Disciple IV studies the writings
of the Old Testament and the book of Revelation in the New Testament.
JESUS IN THE GOSPELS invites believers to look at Jesus in each of the
four Gospels and ask the question, “Who is the Jesus that you see?” The
goal of CHRISTIAN BELIEVER is to make available to people the substance
of the Christian faith that the church has confessed as a way of
connecting to God and living faithfully. The Short Term courses are
surveys of the Old Testament, New Testament, Genesis, or Romans.

Do You Know A Knit-Wit?
You do know a knit-wit; they are among you in Broadway UMC. The
Knit-Wits gather on Monday mornings at 10:00 a.m. in the Parlor to knit,
crochet and have good fellowship. This group of ladies started meeting
last fall and have done projects for missions and local needs. If
everyone came at one time, we would have almost 20, but we come as we
can, and you can, too. If you want to learn to knit or crochet, just
come at 10:00 a.m. on any Monday.
Projects include 59 scarves and cap sets sent to Fran Lynch's mission in
Alaska last Christmas, prayer shawls given for comfort to those who are
not well, scarves and caps to Wesley House in Knoxville, and we are
currently working on lap robes for the August birthday party at Asbury
Place Health Care Center on August 27th. We are also working on chemo
caps and scarves for breast cancer survivors at the Cancer Center at
Blount Memorial Hospital. We have many scarves, caps, shawls, wraps and
miscellaneous items for the UMW Country Store and Dinner on August 29th,
so come prepared to buy for Christmas presents or for yourself for the
fall/winter season. We will be taking scarves and caps to Bethlehem
Community Center in Chattanooga when the United Methodist Women's trip
is rescheduled.
We have all levels of skill in our group and welcome anyone who wants to
help make life better for others, one stitch at a time...............you
can be a Knit-Wit, too!

Oak
Ridge/Wheat Broadway Express Tour Monday,
August 20, Don Watson will join the Broadway Express as he hosts a tour
of the former K-25 site at Oak Ridge, the original area known as Wheat,
Tennessee. When the DOE selected Tennessee as its site for the Manhattan
Project, it claimed all the area known as the town of Wheat. The site
lay inside the security boundary of the Oak Ridge reservation and is
normally inaccessible to the general public. We will see the old church,
the slave graveyard, and learn about life before the DOE project.
We will also tour the Museum of Science and Energy at Oak Ridge focusing
on the Wheat exhibit with pictures and information about that small,
peaceful Tennessee community disrupted by national defense needs during
World War II.
The group will eat at Shoney’s between the two segments of the tour. The
cost is $4 for admission payable at the Museum of Science and Energy, $2
for gas on the bus, and the cost of a meal off the menu at Shoney’s.
Make reservations through the church office. The trip is limited to
those riding the bus because of security issues at Oak Ridge. Therefore,
reservations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis. The bus will
leave the BUMC parking lot at 9:00am and arrive back at 4:30pm.
On
The Light Side
“A little boy was overheard praying:
‘Lord, if you can’t make me a better boy, don’t worry about it. I’m
having a real good time like I am.’”
“After the christening of his baby brother in church, Jason sobbed all
the way home in the back seat of the car. His father asked him three
times what was wrong. Finally, the boy replied, ‘That preacher said he
wanted us brought up in a Christian home, and I wanted to stay with you
guys.’”
“A Mother was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin 5, and Ryan 3. The
boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake. Their mother
saw the opportunity for a moral lesson. ‘If Jesus were sitting here, He
would say, ‘Let my brother have the first pancake, I can wait.’ Kevin
turned to his younger brother and said, ‘Ryan, you be Jesus!’”
“A father was at the beach with his children when the four-year-old son
ran up to him, grabbed his hand, and led him to the shore where a
seagull lay dead in the sand. ‘Daddy, what happened to him?’ the son
asked. ‘He died and went to Heaven,’ the Dad replied. The boy thought a
moment and then said, ‘Did God throw him back down?’”
“A Sunday school teacher asked her children as they were on the way to
church service, ‘And why is it necessary to be quiet in church?’ One
bright little girl replied, ‘Because people are sleeping.’
