The weekly newsletter of Broadway United Methodist Church

December 11, 2007                                           Volume 4, Number 46

“God’s Love”
Sunday we will celebrate God’s love in music, praise, and worship. Our choir with orchestra will present “To Us a Child Is Born” by Bach. We will ponder John 3:16 as our scripture for the day. We will see what God has done and is doing for those he wants a relationship with. Will you accept the gift, or will you decide against God? This is our choice.

God promises eternal life to those who accept and believes in His Son. For those who do not, they will perish after this physical life has ended. Do you want to feel the grace of God? Come and receive a blessing as we continue to prepare for the entrance of God’s gift of His Son at Christmas.

                                                Merry Christmas,

Christmas Vacation Bible School - 9:30-10:15 Sunday mornings

Sunday mornings in the W. R. Allen Hall, all the children are invited to come explore Bethlehem. There will be songs, Bible stories, and crafts. This is a lot of fun for the kids; come and join us.

December 19 - Parents, please let us know if you and your child will be able to attend. There will be a sign up sheet at children’s Sunday school and in the narthex. The children will host a Christmas pageant at 6:00 p.m. followed by a yummy potluck dinner downstairs at 6:30. Parents, we will start gathering and do costumes around 5:00. If you can not make it at 5:00 just get there when you can. Practice for the pageant will be on Wednesday during the Discovery Club time. The pageant will be easy enough for kids that can not make it to Discovery Club to still participate, so please make plans to help us celebrate the coming of the Christ child.

The Messenger Schedule

We will not have a newsletter the week of December 24th. There will be one the week of December 31. However, all articles must be in the church office by 8:30 on Monday, December 31, to be included.

Special Music For Sunday Worship
This Sunday during 10:45 worship, we will celebrate Advent with J. S. Bach’s stirring Cantata 142, To Us a Child Is Born. We welcome members of the Knoxville Symphony who will join us as they accompany the choir and soloists Bob Ergenbright, Ed Sooter, and Jennifer Barnett.

Johann Sebastian Bach (1675-1750), who through his works codified the harmonic and melodic patterns which form the basis of Western art music from Baroque to the 20th Century, enjoyed an uneventful but successful career, similar to that of other musicians of his time in Lutheran Germany. He served as organist at Arrnstadt, as court organist at Muhlhausen and later concertmaster in the chapel of the Duke of Weimar, as music director at the court of a Prince of Cothen, and, finally, as Cantor of the St. Thomas School in Leipzig. The latter was a respected, important position in the Lutheran world to which Bach applied after the death of cantor Johann Kuhnau. He was offered the position after it had been declined by two other eminent musicians, Georg Telemann and Christopher Graupner. Bach’s music was most often dictated by the requirements of whatever position he held at any given time and was always written for the glory of God.

Uns ist ein Kind geboren, “Unto Us a Child Is Born,” takes as its text the Epistle of Titus, Chapter 2, verses 11-14 (“the grace of God appeared to me”), and the Gospel of Luke Chapter 2, verses 1-14, relating the nativity of Christ. It is identified in lists of works by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) as Cantata BWV (Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis) 142, but is now thought by most scholars to be the work of Johann Kuhnau (1660-1722). Kuhnau, who preceded Bach as cantor of the city of Leipzig, was an organist and a scholarly writer on music, as well as a composer best known for keyboard works.
