“You
Are A Name”
Does your name reflect your nature? As children of God
our Christian name should reflect a sense of who we are. Jesus’ name
revealed His nature. He came to save. When we baptize an infant,we ask,
“What name is given to this child?” This question labels them to be
recognized in the Christian community and in the world. Does your name
say much about you? Nick-names often tell a great deal about a person.
Luke 1:26-33 is a statement of Jesus’ nature, essence of being, and who
He is. Names mean something significant. Our last names reveal the
family ancestry to which we belong and from where we have come. Some
persons have been adopted and their names have changed from the
original. When you think about it, we all have been adopted by God’s
grace and love. Come Sunday and ponder your name. What do you reflect in
the overall aspect of living?
In Christ,

District Mission Event
This Sunday, the Maryville District
will sponsor a District Mission Event at Fairview UMC 3:00pm-5:00pm.
Each church in the District has the opportunity to present a display of
their mission activities for the past year and to announce their future
projects. People interested in participating in a Volunteer in Mission
project can make good contacts at this event. At 4:00pm Bishop Swanson
will preach during a service celebrating missions in the District. This
will be great celebration of faith in action. Make your plans now to
attend. If you would like a ride, the bus will leave our parking lot at
3:00pm. Charlie says if you ride the bus, be prepared to get some ice
cream on the return trip to the church.
Youth
To Participate In 30 Hour Famine
The youth are going to do what most of the world does
every day for 30 hours!! They are going to go hungry. Starting Friday,
February 23, at 1:00 they will go without food until 7:00 p.m. on
Saturday, February 24. They will be allowed water during this time.
Our goal this year is to raise awareness and money for the Holston Sudan
Action Team. The event will be an overnight retreat at the church,
during which we will spend time in prayer and reflection. We will have
some special guest speakers to tell us about life in Sudan, and we will
do some surprise event.
It’s tough, but we have a good time anyway. Make plans to come join in;
it is a retreat like no other!!! We have raised around $350.00 so far.
What else can we do??

This Sunday’s Anthem
The Chancel Choir will sing George Sanford’s arrangement
of the Afro-American Spiritual “Good News in the Kingdom.” This text and
melody is found in John Work’s definitive text, “Negro Spirituals”
[sic]. John Work collected over 400 Afro-American work songs, jubilees,
and spiritual melodies and published them for reference. He did not
arrange them or comment on them other than to make them available to
future composers and arrangers. The theme of this spiritual is God’s
promise that, if you believe in Jesus, you will have eternal life and
“won’t die no more.”
