Are
You a Good Example?
The Apostle Paul wanted people to know that he was being
led by God. What leads you? Is it your own desires, needs, and wants; or
is it the desire to see others find life in Christ? Paul is clear about
finding Christ and then sharing His essence, His fragrance, with those
around Him. Paul wanted everyone to know that it was not lip service,
but he sincerely felt God was sharing His wisdom through him. Can God
use you as a faithful, fragrant servant?
Sunday we will look at 2 Corinthians 2:12-17. We will be challenged to
be sincere. Are we sufficient to be used by God to bring others to
Christ? There is much to look forward to when we give our lives to
Christ. Jesus wants to use us to build His kingdom. A kingdom of
forgiveness, salvation, and life. Come and celebrate the presence of
Christ. Come and worship Sunday.
In Christ,

Sign-Up
For Supper Club
It's that time of year again-it's time to sign up for
Broadway's Supper Club. This is an adults only group for singles or
couples who meet once a month in someone's home for brunch, lunch or
dinner or at a restaurant-whatever works best for your group. It's a
wonderful way to make new friends and get to know other members of our
Broadway family. We will have sign up sheets in the bulletin this
Sunday, January 21st. Everyone who signs up is invited to come and meet
your group at a potluck dinner at 6 pm on Wednesday, January 24th. You
will be seated with your group to get acquainted and plan your get
togethers. Looking forward to seeing everyone with covered dishes and
calendars in hand on 1/24. If you have any questions, please call Debbie
Taylor, or Barbara Tiller.
Ron Matthews Concludes General Church Discussion
Wednesday, January 24, at 6:30pm in the library, Rev. Ron
Matthews, Executive Assistant to Bishop Swanson, will conclude our study
about the General, Jurisdictional, and Annual Conference structure and
how we as a local church are related to them. His discussion will
include where our money goes, how our social principles relate to the
local church, what happens when something goes wrong in the general
ministry of the church, and how our Bishop is chosen for us. If you
think that all this may be dry and boring, just remember, it is Ron
Matthews who is answering your questions with his wry wit and East
Tennessee humor.
Odyssey Going Out To Dinner
The Odyssey group will be visiting the Turkey Creek
shopping area in January. We will leave the church parking lot at 2:00
p.m. on Thursday, January 25, and travel to the shops at Turkey Creek
for some shopping time. At 5:00 we will have dinner at Mimis Café. Each
person will order from the menu and pay for their own meal. We will
collect money for gas on our return and should be back to the church by
7:30 or before. Please sign up in the church office by noon on Monday,
January 22.

With
Much Appreciation
Charlie Wimmer received this e-mail from Matt
Jordan and he is passing it on to the congregation.
Dear BUMC,
It’s taken me entirely way too long to do this, but I wanted to send you
this e-mail in an effort to let you know how much I appreciate the
several letters and care packages I’ve received from Broadway. This last
semester was the hardest yet, and it REALLY helped to brighten my day
when I opened my mailbox to find a note of encouragement and support.
The cookies and candy never hurt either. Anyway, thanks for all your
hard work and support, I hope to see you all as soon as I’m able.
Much love,
Matt

a special café for dinner BEFORE valentines. Café Broadway will be open

this Sunday.
Silent Auction
The Silent Auction, sponsored by the Upper Room Sunday
school class, will be Saturday and Sunday, January 27 and 28. All items

Altar Guild Meeting Announced
The first official meeting of the Altar Guild for 2007
will be Wednesday, January 31, at 6:15 p.m. We will meet for dessert and
drink, then go over the Guild guidelines as we tour the church building.
Please plan to attend; this is the first meeting we have had in a long
time, and we would like to get re-acquainted. We will be giving out new
guidelines, the revised list of acolytes, a list of helpers and
advisors, and a guideline of liturgical colors.
If you would like to join Altar Guild, please come and/or call the
co-chairs, Susanne Martin, or Nan Taylor. This is a wonderful ministry
provided for our church, and we welcome men as well as women to be a
part of the guild.
Children’s Ministry Workshop:
Part 2
Wednesday, January 17 and 24, we will have part two and three of the
Children’s Workshop. These will be from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. on level 5 at
the church.
A Little Humor
There was a very gracious lady who was mailing an old
family Bible to her brother in another part of the country. “Is there
anything breakable in here?” asked the postal clerk. “Only the Ten
Commandments,” answered the lady.

Disciple Short Term Old Testament Study
February 4 through March 25, on Sunday evenings
6:00-7:00pm, Bob Ergenbright will facilitate an eight-week study on the
Old Testament. The sessions use the Disciple model with class discussion
and video components. Participants will use a guidebook to lead them
through the study. There is no sign-up list. Just come to the first
class. If you plan to participate, call the office so that we anticipate
how many guidebooks to have available for purchase at $15. Bring your
own Bible. The Old Testament is the basis for our understanding God’s
gift of His Son in our lives today. Without the prophecy and preparation
during Old Testament times, Jesus’ birth, death, and resurrection would
make no sense to the hurting world of the first century AD. Our
perception of the relationship between the Old Testament message and
Jesus’ teachings directly shape our response to Jesus’ presence in our
lives today and how we share His message of hope, grace, mercy, and
justice with the rest of the world.
Sunday’s Chancel Choir Anthem
This Sunday the Chancel Choir will sing “Lift Up Your
Heads” by Emma L. Ashford. The text is based on Psalm 24:7-10 and has
long been a favorite of composers. It was recited by Jews first thing on
the first day of each week; it is used on Ascension Day; and this
particular text from the Psalm is sung before Holy Communion in many
Reformed churches. It was originally used when a great procession of
priests and people carried the Ark of the Covenant into the sanctuary in
an annual celebration. Imagine beginning our worship outside the church
building standing at the front doors and calling, “Lift up your heads, O
gates! And be lifted up, O ancient doors! That the King of glory may
come in.” Imagine us breaking down the doors of our church so that we
may enter and praise the “King of Glory.” Then imagine a voice from
within asking, “Who is the King of Glory?” and we shout back, “The Lord
of hosts, He is the King of Glory!” What a testimony to our faith!
Emma L. Ashford (1884-1930), the composer of this setting of these
words, was the wife of the Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds at
Vanderbilt University during the early twentieth century. She composed
many songs, anthems, and instrumental works during her career and was
the alto soloist at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Nashville. She was
also an accomplished organist and teacher of harmony. One of her
endearing accomplishments was her composition of “O Alma Mater,” also
called “Old Vandy,” the school song for Vanderbilt University.

Spaghetti Supper
Welcome Home Resurrection 2007!
Wow, what a great time we had in Gatlinburg this past
weekend. Broadway took 26 youth and 9 adults to the Holston Conference
Youth Retreat. Many dances were danced and songs were sung. Our speaker,
“Johnny V”, shared with us how we need to not only be a believer in
Christ but more importantly, a follower of Christ. Anybody can believe,
but it takes a commitment to follow. The youth of BUMC are growing
boldly in their faith. Retreats like this are a great help, but we would
be lost without our Church Family. We thank you for your support and
prayers while we were away. Please continue to pray for them, many of
them made some great commitments this weekend. They will need our
continued support.
