“Are
You A Prisoner Of Hope?”
The time between Christmas and Easter is one of the most
significant times in the Christian year. We receive God’s Son, and then
see how He is treated. We are pilgrims on a spiritual journey learning
more about our Lord and Savior. In Zechariah, chapter 9, we read the
words, “Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope.” This was a
historical statement of the reuniting of the northern and southern
kingdoms of Israel and Judah. However, it is a statement of relationship
for us as Christians. Our stronghold is the Lord. Even though life may
be tough for us, we have the Hope of God’s Love and Redeeming Grace.
Sunday we will look at our Christian development. Someone once said,
“Doing nothing can be awful tiring.” Doing can also tire us out. Sunday
we will ask for the Energy of God. Are you receiving power from God to
live, work, and share? Sunday we will seek God’s presence as the
“stronghold” of our lives and live as “prisoners of hope.” See you
Sunday.
In Christ,

Change In Soup Labels
The Campbell Company has made a change in the requirements for the soup
labels. The only part of the label they will accept now is the UPC code
and the picture of the child by it. If this isn’t clear to you, you may
bring the whole label. Thank you for your support of this project.
Almost There!
We need just eight more persons to help in our Sunday
morning nursery. One of the ministries we have for our families with
small children is the morning nursery. The nursery is staffed every
Sunday with two persons and will usually have two to six children ages
one through six. This is a commitment of just two or three Sundays for
the year. If you would like to help, please contact Charlie Wimmer or
Vicky Maslowski.
Cornerstone Youth To Be Locked In!
The Cornerstone Youth (5th and 6th graders) will have a
Lock In on level five of the church February 9-10, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00
a.m. The night will be filled with fun, pizza, movies on the big screen
and some sleep. Permission forms are located outside the youth office.
Mr. Ergenbright Attending Musicians Conference
Bob Ergenbright will be in Nashville Thursday through
Sunday this week at the United Methodist Church Musicians Retreat and
Conference sponsored by the General Board of Discipleship at the
Scarritt-Bennett Center in Nashville. The retreat will include
workshops, reading sessions, worship, work with the United Methodist
Publishing House, and fellowship. Sponsored by The Fellowship of United
Methodists in Music and Worship Arts, the time spent here will give the
50 participants from around the country an opportunity to share ideas
and become acquainted with the leaders of the general agencies of the
United Methodist Church most closely associated with music in worship.
JUBILATION Is Coming!
If you are going to JUBILATION, the Holston Conference
senior adult retreat at the Meadow View Resort and Conference Center in
Kingsport, TN, contact the office for more information, a brochure, and
a registration form. If enough people indicate their interest, we will
take the church bus. This year’s retreat has more activities planned
than any of the previous years. There are 14 workshops available, a
Sunday evening banquet featuring James Rogers and an ice cream social,
Bible studies with Bishop Richard Looney (a distinguished Holstonian),
storytelling with Charles Maynard, dynamic worship opportunities with
Rev. Jonathan Jonas, pastor at First UMC – Farragut, and lots of free
time to explore Kingsport and Jonesborough. As we are prone to say in
East Tennessee, “Ya’ll Come, Ya Hear!”
With Much Appreciation
Please give my thanks to the Broadway children. It was a
great box of items. We helped 66 families at Christmas and needed to
restock.
Loves and lots,
Fran Lynch
Altar Guild Meeting Announced
The first official meeting of the Altar Guild for 2007
will be Wednesday, January 31, at 6:15 p.m. We will meet for dessert and
drink, then go over the Guild guidelines as we tour the church building.
Please plan to attend; this is the first meeting we have had in a long
time, and we would like to get re-acquainted. We will be giving out new
guidelines, the revised list of acolytes, a list of helpers and
advisors, and a guideline of liturgical colors.
If you would like to join Altar Guild, please come and/or call the
co-chairs, Susanne Martin, 977-4139, or Nan Taylor, 984-8585. This is a
wonderful ministry provided for our church, and we welcome men as well
as women to be a part of the guild.
Sunday’s Anthem
“What Shall I Render to My God” is a setting of the words
of the noted Methodist hymnist, Charles Wesley. Although Sir Isaac Watts
wrote a hymn text using the same title, Wesley’s hymn became the most
popular during their lifetimes. That being said, neither hymn made it
into our present United Methodist Hymnal. Wesley’s hymn recounts the
gifts given us by God and how His grace can never be earned, but comes
freely to us.
Austin Lovelace, who composed this setting of Wesley’s hymn, was the
editor of the Tunes used in the 1968 Methodist Hymnal and wrote “Music
and Worship in the Church,” the book that became a guide for church
musicians and pastors alike during the 1960’s through the 1980’s. He
also contributed to the current “United Methodist Hymnal.” He is still
active as a church music and organist clinician, composer, organ
recitalist, and lecturer.
