“To Take Control”
Sunday is Father’s Day. Dads will be recognized for their contribution of love, nurture, and support. Dad’s will be seen as the earthly fathers who are hopefully showing the love of Christ Jesus to their families. Some dads have not been great examples of faith. Many of us could do better. We must consider where we have placed our trust. Is it in God, or our own resources and so called power? Control seems to be an illusion. Things happen to us, or to our loved ones, that are beyond our control. God is the one who is in control.

Sunday we will look at trust. Do we trust God’s work and promise, or do we just trust ourselves? When we give our issues to God, we begin to trust His direction. God has promised to guide us and deliver us to a better state of being. Come and receive a blessing. Come and realize God is in control, and we are not. Come and see we can live by the power of God’s grace and direction.

                                               In Christ,

Offering Taken To Annual Conference
Thank you, thank you, thank you from the Missions Committee!! We had a very successful Spring Missions campaign due to the generosity of our Broadway family. As you know, the Holston Conference asked us to fill school kit bags for Liberia and to collect a special offering to support mission work in Brazil. We set a goal for BUMC to fill 15 school kits - we exceeded our goal and sent 26 bags to Liberia! The Conference hoped to receive a $300 contribution from Broadway to go to Brazil - we surpassed that goal as well and sent a check to Annual Conference for $1070.96! We also sent a check to Annual Conference for the Change for Children campaign totaling $171.51.

In addition to these projects, a love offering was taken at the last Wednesday Fellowship Supper to benefit Wesley House Community Center in Knoxville - the offering totaled $350.00! We just can’t thank you enough for your prayers and financial support of the mission projects at home and abroad. Thanks again!

On Sunday, July 1, we will take a special offering to send with Ralph and Gerri Bradley when they once again travel to Estonia. The money will be used to continue with their work in Estonia.

Welcome To Galilee By-the-Sea  In two short weeks, our church will be filled with children and families seeking fun and adventure at our Galilee By-the-Sea VBS! They’ll be worshiping God through songs and prayer, making projects, and discovering life-changing Bible truths in fun and memorable ways.

Thank you very much for the items donated and created so far! As we finalize plans and supplies, please check our donation board and help us fill those needs. To make our village authentic, you can help us create an open air farmer’s market to view and sample food that people would have enjoyed in Galilee. We could use a variety of fruits as well as dates, figs, grapes, olives, pomegranates, raisins, apricots and almonds near the date June 24, please mark items “VBS.”

From UMW
Thank you for attending the May 30th UMW Fifth Wednesday Night Meal. Sharon Earle from the Wesley House Center in Knoxville spoke passionately about the services provided by the Wesley House to the children in the inner-city neighborhoods of Knoxville. This vital, much needed program receives support from the General Board of Global Missions of the United Methodist Church, but as with all missions-based programs there is never enough to meet all the needs. A generous Love Offering was collected at the end of the program and given to Ms. Earle for Wesley House.

If you missed this meal and program, stay tuned...there will be other opportunities for us to learn and help, not only Wesley House but other missions as well.

Again, thank you for your generous support of the United Methodist Women and our projects that help to serve others.

The UMW looks forward to seeing everyone at the August UMW Fifth Wednesday Night Meal... more info to follow.
Thank you,
Jill Fox

With Much Appreciation
Dear Church Family,
Thank you for such a generous gift. I appreciate all the love, prayers and support throughout all my years as a member of Broadway. I will take all the memories and lessons learned as I continue my journey of faith into college and beyond. I will keep Broadway in my prayers as I know you will continue to keep me in yours.
Love,

Choir Camp Coming
Put on your singing cap and your dancing shoes for Children’s Choir Camp, June 20-22. This year we will sing the songs of Scandinavia and also some Charles Wesley hymns. Charles Wesley composed over 9,000 hymns, many of which are in the United Methodist Hymnal. Learn about the Stave Church; learn about the children of Scandinavia; learn about Methodism in those countries; and learn about our Methodist tradition of singing our faith.

Costume Sewing Day Planned
There will be a costume sewing day for Vacation Bible School Monday, June 18, at 10:00 a.m. in the W.R. Allen Hall. Bring your scissors and sewing machines and have a fun morning!

If it’s been a while since you’ve been to Vacation Bible School, now’s your chance to join this new ministry. This year’s VBS program requires participation from all generations. Help us recreate a bustling marketplace with your presence. Come assist for 1 night, 2 nights or all week. Visit, catch up and join your friends as you help set the environment of a seaside village. We’ll need extra hands with crafts, bread baking, and lots of smiles. You will help spread the good news of Jesus and His latest sightings. Come help us bring the Bible to life and learn something new!

Please let Jennie Ottinger, Rebecca Brown, or Charlie Wimmer know how you can serve your church and community by leading a portion of the program or supporting the teams in place. Remember a 5 night commitment is not required, but spend at least 1 night with us and watch God work in powerful ways. Thank you in advance for making this vision a reality.

Thanks,
Jennie Ottinger

Wesley House Has A Need
Sharon Earle, from the Wesley House Center in Knoxville, called this past week with a request for assistance. The staff had just spent a couple of hours using small hand held pencil sharpeners to prepare pencils for the summer program. Easy enough task you might think, but not when you have a hundred or so to do. The request was a simple one....5 electric pencil sharpeners. Just imagine how quickly those pencils would have been sharpened! If you, your class or group would like to help purchase the pencil sharpeners for Wesley House call Jill Fox at
254-1673 or email mafoxy@charter.net. Thank you for your support of this vital mission.

Odyssey News For June and July
We will not have an Odyssey Trip in June due to the bus being on the Broadway Express trip to Lancaster, PA. However, in July we will be combining efforts with the Life Beginners Group from New Providence Presbyterian Church. We will be taking a trip on the Star of Knoxville Riverboat on Friday, July 20. (Note the change in date.) We will leave from Broadway’s parking lot at 10:45 a.m. The trip begins at noon; we will have lunch, then return to the dock at 1:30. Cost for the day is $26.00. This includes everything. Reservations with full payment are due by Friday, June 29. This is a non-refundable trip. To make your reservation please contact the church office, 982-6192.

Relay For Life
Our youth and a few wide eyed adults spent the night on the track in support of friends and family with cancer. The youth raised $2,000.00 for the American Cancer Society. Thanks to everyone that helped with this event and especially to the youth who have a heart for serving and love for others.

A Word From The Technology Team
If you have a CD, DVD, or pictures that need to be shown during the RS Service, please contact the team member responsible for the slides on that Sunday in advance. You can call Judy or Dan - they have alist of the team members and the Sundays they are working. Due to recent changes in the balcony computer, we can no longer take last minute requests to play a CD or DVD or to add pictures to our presentation. We have certain last minute details that must be dealt with on Sunday morning and it causes delays and interruptions in the flow of the service if we are asked to add something to our presentation at the last minute. If you have a CD or DVD that needs to be shown, please contact the team member and make arrangements to get the CD, DVD, or pictures to them as soon as possible. If this is not possible, please plan to be at the church at 8:00 a.m. on that Sunday to meet with the team member. We do not want to turn anyone away who has an important message, but we must ask that you cooperate with us to help make the service meaningful. Technical glitches and delays distract from the service and causes unnecessary stress for the team members.

If you need something shown during the 10:30 service, please contact Gene Pafford at gpafford@utk.edu or by calling him at home at 977-7609. Also, please let Dan know so he can plan accordingly and make sure the screen is left up after the RS Service.

Thank your for your cooperation.

You Never Know What Will Happen

His name is Bill. He has wild hair, wears a T-shirt with holes in it, jeans, and no shoes. This was literally his wardrobe for his entire four years of college. He is brilliant. Kind of profound and very, very bright. He became a Christian while attending college. Across the street from the campus is a well-dressed, very conservative church. They want to develop a ministry to the students but are not sure how to go about it.

One day Bill decides to go there. He walks in with no shoes, jeans, his T-shirt, and wild hair. The service has already started and so Bill starts down the aisle looking for a seat. The church is completely packed and he can’t find a seat. By now, people are really looking a bit uncomfortable, but no one says anything. Bill gets closer and closer to the pulpit, and when re realizes there are no seats, he just squats down right on the carpet.

By now the people are really uptight, and the tension in the air is thick. About this time, the minister realizes that from way at the back of the church, a deacon is slowly making his way toward Bill. Now the deacon is in his eighties, has silver-gray hair, and a three-piece suit. A godly man, very elegant, very dignified, very courtly. He walks with a cane and, as he starts walking toward this boy, everyone is saying to themselves that you can’t blame him for what he’s going to do. How can you expect a man of his age and of his background to understand some college kid on the floor?

It takes a long time for the man to reach the boy. The church is utterly silent except for the clicking of the man’s cane. All eyes are focused on him. You can’t even hear anyone breathing. The minister can’t even preach the sermon until the deacon does what he has to do. Any now they see this elderly man drop his cane on the floor. With great difficulty, he lowers himself and sits down next to Bill and worships with him so he won’t be alone.

Everyone chokes up with emotion. When the minister gains control, he says, “What I’m about to preach, you will never remember. What you have just seen, you will never forget.”

“Be careful how you live, YOU may be the only Bible some people will ever read!
