“Don’t Let the Fire Die”

As we came to worship on Sunday after an exciting Pentecost worship, several of us wondered - What can you do after that sort of worship high? After 40 Days of praying for God to move in powerful ways in Holston Conference and in our church and another 50 Days of observing the “Golden Days of Evangelism” we gathered together in a combined worship experience and picnic and we were deeply moved. At the lake that afternoon, we celebrated four baptisms, received four members by profession of faith, another by reaffirmation of faith and 3 more by transfer. It was, by all accounts, an energetic, fun, unique and meaningful day together. So...what’s next?

God makes me laugh. So often God answers the questions and the prayers of my Spirit in ways that are not at all what I expect. This past Sunday, the Crossties band played a new anthem at the first service. “The Church on Fire”. This rousing song reminded us that “anything can happen and it probably will; something very good, something good is going on around here!” Not too long after the fire alarm sounded. (While I am glad that the sound of the alarm seemed to get everyone’s attention, we may need to work on emergency response protocols!) I heard some youth as they came down the stairs, “I thought four minutes was too long...” As I stood with others outside, I witnessed a youth teacher coming out the door carrying the microwave with the offensive burnt popcorn in it. As much as I have teased the youth (they say they were just following my directions - “Pastor Amy told us to be the church on fire..., it is only now as I look back and ahead that I hear God’s laughter. Anything can happen and it probably will.

Life, pace, priorities and schedules can change in the summer. Broadway’s summer programming will be different, but not absent. I pray that we will continue to be challenged to be responsive to God’s Spirit moving, that we have an ongoing desire to grow in prayer, in Contagious Faith and in our life together. Remember, anything can happen with a Church that is on fire.

                            Shalom,

Broadway UMC Approved as Host

Site for Angel Food Ministries

It’s official. Broadway has been approved as a host site for Angel Food Ministries. AFM is a non-profit, non-denominational organization which provided food relief and financial assistance to communities across the USA. The program is open to everyone. There are no qualifications, income restrictions or applications. One standard box of food costs $30.00 and has an average retail value of $60.00. One box will feed a family of 4 for about a week and a senior for about a month. The food is high quality. There are no second-hand items, no damaged or out dated goods, no dented cans without labels, no day-old breads and no over ripe produce. After school snacks, fresh produce, allergen free food, meat and seafood boxes are also available. Those not wanting to purchase food for themselves, can buy for others in need at significant savings. This is an exciting opportunity to spread the word of God, bring people into the church and minister to our community!

Volunteers are needed to help with registration, transportation, orders and distribution. Please contact John Kidd, Host Site Director, at kiddjohn@hotmail.com if you would like to help or with any questions. Menus can be viewed and orders can be placed at www.angelfoodministries.com. Choose Broadway UMC as your pick up site, select the items you want to order, pay, then bring a box on distribution day. It’s that simple. Menus can also be found on the bulletin board downstairs, at the church office and in the narthex.

Our first distribution as a host site will be Saturday, June 19 from 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. Orders placed at the church will be due on Sunday, June 13, 2010. Orders placed online will be due before June 15, 2010.
Place your order by June 1, 2010 and use coupon code ZOOMFEEDBACK for 10% off any box or special. This ministry is not a handout. It’s a hand up!

Way to Go, Broadway Children!

This past Sunday, when the fire alarm sounded during the Sunday school hour, our children knew exactly what to do. They went immediately to the nearest exit and gathered quietly out on the sidewalk. We thank God that it was a minor problem, but we also commend the Maryville Fire Department for their prompt investigation. This incident should prompt all Sunday school classes to determine the safest, quickest way for members to exit the building.

Going To Summer Camp?

Is your child/youth going to summer camp this year? Let us know when and where. Send information to Charlie at youthbum@yahoo.com

Come to VBS 2010

and get ready for adventures on the High Seas as we set sail through God’s Word!

The dates for Vacation Bible School (VBS) are Tuesday, June 22-Friday, June 25th with a wrap up party at Camp Wesley Woods on Saturday for the whole family to enjoy. Times are 5:30-8:15 p.m. A supper/snack will be served from 5:30-6:00 p.m. Preschool up to 6th grade are invited to set sail and enjoy the fun at VBS!

Something different that we are doing this year that is VERY important for planning and budgeting purposes is, we really need you to register BEFORE the start of VBS. Please register your children by Sunday, June 13th. There are tables set up in the Children’s Department and in the narthex at the back of the sanctuary with a pre-registration list and health forms. You may also register on line at www.broadwayumc.net Then look under the children’s page for “VBS”. Health forms may be brought the first night (unless your child has allergies, then we would need to know those ahead of time for meal planning).

This High Sea Adventure will teach our children that: God’s word is true.
God’s word is comforting.
God’s word is surprising.
God’s word is life-changing.

Last but not least...if you have any Nautical items that can be used for props or decorations we would love to borrow them. (They will need to be tagged by you with your name.) Anything will help with our decorating budget...captain’s hats, fish, nets, nautical pictures, light houses etc...You can put them on the stage in the fellowship hall.

Thank you and we look forward to seeing you at VBS on our High Seas adventure!

Any questions, contact Alice Croft, 984-2482, Kathleen Gersh, 984-7720, or Charlie Wimmer, 607-0068.

VBS Wrap-up Party

Lunch will be served at the gazebo at 12:00, then you are welcome to swim, hike or just enjoy the fellowship of friends. We will provide the hot dogs but ask that you bring side items to go with the dogs.

With Much Appreciation

Dear Friends,

I want to thank everyone for their prayers, visits, and calls during my stay in the hospital. I am home and making a little progress in walking every day.

                                          Thanks,

                                          Violet Smith

Dear Members of Broadway,

I just wanted to say thank you for the generous donations to help offset the cost of my Eagle project. I am proud to say that the shelter at the Ropes 3 course at Wesley Woods was completed in one day. I couldn’t have done it without your help.

                                          Tommy Wade

You Are Invited

The Community Food Connection has recently moved to 311 Whitecrest. They will have their Grand Opening and store dedication on Saturday, July 17th at 3:00 p.m. in the store’s parking lot. Everyone is invited for this brief event. Congressman Jimmy Duncan will be part of the dedication.

June - Men’s Health

“Long life to you! Good health to you and your household! And good health to all that is yours! 1 Samuel 25:6 NIV

Men can live healthier, longer lives just by knowing their health threats and how to work through those risks. Statistics show that heart disease is the number one threat with cancer, injuries, stroke, COPD (respirator disease), diabetes, flu, suicide, kidney disease, and Alzheimer’s making up the top ten. By listening to your body and adopting good lifestyle habits, you can decrease your rise for life-threatening health issues.

A healthy, balanced diet will greatly reduce the risk for five of the top ten threats: heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, and kidney disease. Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are heart healthy selections and can fight some cancers as well. They also help maintain a healthy weight which is necessary for the prevention of diabetes, and kidney failure which is a complication of diabetes and high blood pressure.

Risky behavior can cut a man’s life short and is easily preventable. Accidents from automobiles, falls, and the use of chemicals can be fatal or seriously debilitating so wear seat belts, drive safely, use chemicals in a well-ventilated area, and use ladders carefully. Also lose the smoking habit as it increases your risk of heart disease, cancer, and complications with respiratory disease and diabetes.

The three remaining health threats - flu, suicide, and Alzheimers - can be decreased by being proactive, eating right, and avoiding risky behavior. Exercise, get an annual flu shot, don’t smoke, and eat a healthy diet to prevent illness and stimulate your brain. Avoid falls which have an apparent link to Alzheimers and avoid addictions to prevent suicides and self-harm.

Know your body, listen to its needs, and see your physician when things do not seem right. Your families want a future with you so look at your life and see what can be changed. A few simple adjustments can give you better health and longer life. ( Source: National Library of Medicine www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/menshealth.html)

Summer Sunday School for 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th Grades

Starting this Sunday, June 6, we will combine these four grades for the summer. We will meet in room 502 (the green youth room). Sunday school this summer will be in Jeopardy! Maybe you would like “Books of the Bible” for 300 or how about “things in the Sanctuary” for 400. Your final Jeopardy answer is “Yes”... the question - What is “Will I be at Sunday school this Summer?” See you there!

Thanks For All Your Help

What an awesome (in the true sense of the word) time we had together as we celebrated Pentecost this past weekend. (May 23) This day’s celebration and the entire Contagious Faith experience could not have happened without a lot of help and leadership. A very special thank you to the newly formed Evangelism Committee under the leadership of Julie Hays for their creativity, communications, organization and guidance throughout these past 90 days. Thanks also to those who volunteered to host Contagious Faith small groups in their homes over the past 6 weeks! We are grateful for the ongoing work and support of the worship committee led by Kim Hill as they again organized, planned and offered a passionate, joyful combined worship service. And finally, thank you to all who participated in a small group, received the daily email devotions, practiced some evangelism tips, prayed and responded to the challenges to be Contagious! May the work of the Holy Spirit and the movement of Pentecost continue!

Game Day for Hill Toppers

All Hill Toppers (age 65 and older) are invited to this month’s Game Day on Thursday, June 17th at 1:00 p.m. Following a devotional we’ll be playing some table games and Wii games. Would you like to try your hand at bowling or tennis? We’re also going to tackle a 300-piece puzzle. Refreshments will be served. For more information call Frank Mason at 681-6307.

is June 13

CAN Sunday is the time each month when we bring non-perishable items to worship and Sunday school to share with our neighbors in Blount County who need a little extra help. We take these offerings to the Blount County Food Pantry. Items needed include flour, corn meal, sugar, peanut butter, boxed macaroni and cheese, canned fruits, vegetables and soups, and canned meat.

Mugs For Hospice Receives “Thank You”

We had a wonderful abundance of flowers given us by the Dee Rizzo family and the Connie Davis family. Connie used to save mugs from the New Providence monthly sale and give them to us for our flower gifts. This is a thank you from Hospice.

“Thank you so much for spreading God’s glorious beauty with the Blount Memorial Hospice patients, caregivers and bereaved. Our staff was overcome with amazement at the beauty they could share with those who are hurting.”

If anyone in the church would like to help with this mission, please contact Nan Taylor at 984-8585.

Bishop Swanson to
Emphasize Vietnam

Bishop Swanson is planning ahead. His 2012 mission emphasis will be on Vietnam Veterans around the conference. A Vietnam vet himself, Swanson hopes to create a healing mission for other veterans. All of us can help by locating members in our church and community that are Vietnam Veterans, women that were in the Army Nurse Corp and widows of the Vietnam War. Please send names and addresses to Bill Daugherty at Holston Conference Office, PO Box 850, Alcoa, TN 37701.

Our church connection to the project is Bob Ergenbright. Please contact Bob with names and addresses, and he will forward them to the Conference office.

Solar Stove Update

The Maryville District has done it! 20 solar stoves have been paid for with extra money raised to help the cost of shipping. The stoves will be put together and each Methodist church in and around Yei will get one. Women in the churches will be taught how to use them. Broadway contributed money for 3 stoves.

The Wesley Fellowship Class
(The following was in Sunday, May 30's bulletin. We would like to share it with you.)

Today is the last meeting of the Wesley Fellowship Class. Members of the current class will be joining other classes here at Broadway UMC. As this transition takes place, we wanted to pause and thank this remarkable group of people for their contributions to the heritage of Broadway UMC and the legacy they leave for all of us.

According to The People’s History of Broadway United Methodist Church (1984), a Class for Young Adults was formed perhaps as early as 1937. Several members of that class believed that was “…the forerunner of (the) Wesley Fellowship Class.”

Originally the class met in the old gymnasium on (what was then) the third floor. Their teacher was Rev. Dr. R. O. Elder, pastor at Broadway from October 1936 to October 1941. In The People’s History of Broadway UMC, “Jane Roberson remembers that he used to say to the young married couples, ‘Love each other and be good to each other, for if you don’t someone else will’.”

In 1942, a Wesley Fellowship Class was formed for young adults graduating from the Youth Department. It appears these two classes later merged. Over the years the class continued to grow and changed locations several times.

The Wesley Fellowship Class often gathered socially about once a month at church or in each others homes. Cecil Moore reported in The People’s History of Broadway UMC that at one of these events, “…several of those attending the party were in his garage when someone accidentally set off a box of fireworks which was stored there. Cecil recalls that ‘they had a hot time for a while, but everybody left the garage at the same time’.”

Around 1974-1975, the Wesley Fellowship Class moved to their current location between the Iva Moore Class and what was then the Pastor’s study. In 1984, the Men’s Bible Class joined the Wesley Fellowship Class. Throughout their history, the Wesley Fellowship Class has been a wonderful example of a group that could successfully deal with change and transition. They started, they grew, they repeatedly moved and through it all they remained faithful to their classmates and their church. Now, 73 years later, they continue to serve as an example of commitment and grace for all of us to emulate.

And so, we say “Thank you” to all the past and present members of The Wesley Fellowship Class. The grace and love you have shown each other and this congregation over almost three quarters of a century will remain a living legacy for the community of faith known as Broadway United Methodist Church.
