March 16, 2010                                           Volume 2, Number 6

The Road to the Cross

As March continues to unfold there is busy-ness in the world around us. Spring Breaks at schools call many families away from normal routine to enjoy time. The sunshine peaking out calls to those of us stuck inside for these cold months. As March marches on...we draw ever closer and closer to the cross...and to the empty tomb.

The Season of Lent is here to help us prepare our hearts and lives for the rebirth of hope, of faith and of relationship with our Lord. This season reminds us that good always overcomes evil; that the sun will shine again and that all of our sin, brokenness and “dirty clutter” of our spirits can be made new in the light of God’s love, grace and forgiveness.

We continue to focus on the Lord’s Prayer, not merely as an exercise in what the words mean, but as a reminder that this prayer that we pray together every week shapes us! Jesus taught us to pray, in the way...Jesus reminds us to pray–to talk to God, to come before God daily, to share ourselves and to listen. When we look at the deeper meaning of every phrase of the Lord’s Prayer, we recognize what an awesome gift and responsibility we have as Christian disciples!

The world around us calls out to us - ball practice, errands, work, trips and spring time activities. I pray that each of you continue to chose to make your spiritual life a priority. In one of my favorite lines from one of my favorite movies, “The Princess Bride”, a character says, “If you haven’t got your health, what have you got?” I add, if we don’t attend to our spiritual health and lives - the rest isn’t worth much.

I pray that you continue to look at your life and see yourself as God sees you – completely and totally beloved, special & precious while at the same time broken, sinful and in need of a Savior. May you continue to Observe a Holy Lent as you allow God to help you do some spiritual Spring Cleaning!

See you Sunday.

                                            Shalom,

Palm Sunday - Sunday, March 28
Join us at both worship services as we re-enact Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. For all who are able, the worship service will begin in the fellowship hall and process with palms to the sanctuary.

Lenten Prayer Path on level 5 of the church   Hosted by the youth, this prayer path is a meditative walk/prayer time through Holy Week. Participants will listen to scripture and meditations on a CD as they visit different stations leading to the Resurrection. The path will take 45-60 minutes to experience.

Thursday, April 1 - 4:30-6:30 p.m.
Friday, April 2 - 11:00-2:00 p.m.
Saturday, April 3 - 12:00-2:00 p.m.

Maundy Thursday - Thursday, April 1, 7:00PM     You are invited to worship and participate in Holy Communion on Maundy Thursday, April 1, 2010, at 7:00pm in the sanctuary. The service will feature the Chancel Choir, Broadway Actors, and instrumentalists as we experience Ruth Schram’s “The Living Last Supper,” a dramatic presentation of Leonardo Da Vinci’s famous painting, “The Last Supper.” Each Disciple searches his own experience with Jesus as he asks himself, “Is it I?” after Jesus announces that one of them will betray him.
You will not want to miss this poignant moment in the Holy Week story as we witness the events leading to Good Friday, Jesus’ crucifixion, and his ultimate triumph on Easter Sunday morning. The joy of the Resurrection comes directly from the anguish of Jesus’ suffering during his separation from his Disciples and his sacrifice on the Cross.

A nursery will be provided. The service is free and open to the public.

Good Friday - Friday, April 2 The chapel will be open for prayer and meditation from 12:00 noon - 3:00 p.m.

Easter Morning - Sunday, April 4 Easter Sunrise Service - 7:00 a.m. Christ the Lord is Risen! Come celebrate and remember that early morning when the women went to the tomb and the tomb was empty. The Lord had risen just as he said! We will also gather early on Easter morning in the parking lot of the church. The youth will lead us in a service as the sun rises over the mountains.

Rejuvenation Station - 8:30 a.m. Contemporary service in the sanctuary with the praise band.

Traditional Worship - 10:35 a.m. We will have our traditional worship service with the Chancel Choir singing and concluding the service with the “Hallelujah chorus” by Handel.

Would You Like To Become a Member of Broadway?  We will be receiving new members to Broadway UMC on Easter morning at both worship services. If you would like to join at this time please let the church office or Amy know.

If you would like to learn more about the United Methodist Church  Rev. Amy will begin a new class on “What It Means to be a United Methodist” at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday mornings beginning April 11 which will run for six weeks. Contact the church office or Amy if you have questions about this class or would like to participate.

Family Promise Update

Our next date to assist St. Andrews Episcopal Church in hosting homeless families will be April 4-11 (the week of Easter). The Square One Circle will once again prepare food for Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings. We will also provide evening and overnight hosts on those three evenings. Evening hosts (5:30-8:30 p.m.) will interact with the families and do activities with the children (reading, games, videos, etc.). Overnight hosts (8:30 p.m. - 700 a.m.) will also have time to interact with the families and will be provided sleeping quarters. St. Andrews has also asked for help with the laundry following the hosting week.

New volunteers will need to get a background check and also go through a two hour training course. This applies to anyone who has contact with the guests (even for food preparers who join them for the evening meal). Frank Mason is qualified to lead the training courses and has two planned this month. He will lead the training sessions on Tuesday, March 23rd. One session will be at 2:00 p.m. and the second will be at 7:00 p.m. Both sessions will be held in the church library. Background check forms can be filled out at those times. For more information call Frank at 681-6307.

Family Promise of Blount County also has a need for volunteers who are available on Sunday afternoons. Volunteers are needed to staff the Family Promise Day Center on Sunday afternoons from 11:30 to 5:00. This will not involve phone answering, computer, or office work, just being there to provide hospitality to our guest families. Volunteers can sign up to work a 3-hour shift by calling 233-4737 and speaking to Meghan Rasnake or emailing her at Meghan@blountfamilypromise.org.

Many hands make light the work, and we need your helping hands and servants’ hearts.

                                    Many thanks,
                                    Family Promise Staff

Thank you for your continued prayers and support for this important ministry.

After Church Luncheon on April 18
The congregational care committee will host a lunch for everyone following the 10:35 morning service on April 18. The price for the meal is a requested donation to help defray some of the costs of printing the new church directory. The company that was to provide the pictorial directory has had financial problems and will not be able to give us the directories. The new directory will include 22 color pages, along with an updated roster of families, a birthday calendar, and a listing of church leadership and missions contact information. Even with a successful lunch, we may have to ask for a donation for each directory, when they become available later in the spring. We thank all of you for your patience over these recent months as we've all been waiting for the directory. Any questions, please contact Ron Pyron 977-6738 or Bobbie Smith 233-2368.

In this exotic land you can go from the beach to a glacier in two hours. Come and share this exciting adventure.

Menu: Lasagna, salad bar and dessert. Cost: $6.00 - adult; $4.00 - children; $18.00 - family. Reservations need to be in by 10:00 Tuesday morning. Child care will be provided.

News From the Missions Committee  The Missions Committee met on Sunday, Feb. 28, and discussed a full and exciting agenda of opportunities for reaching out and sharing in Christ’s name for 2010. You will all be hearing about some of these opportunities – some familiar, some new – in the coming weeks. In order to streamline communications with the Missions Committee, we have named three members to serve as liaisons for different groups in the congregation. If your group has suggestions or questions or needs to coordinate some activity with the Missions Committee, here are your contacts: Sunday School classes – Hope Bruce (hopeinicu@aol.com); FRINS, Golden Council, Knit-Wits – M. Sue Ivens (977-9130); UMW, UMM – Mary Lynn Roy (roydogs@bellsouth.net). If we have overlooked any group, please speak up and let us know! Of course you can contact any of these people all on your own, too. We welcome input from you whether or not you are representing a group. Please be in prayer for the Missions Committee as we work to share Christ’s love and our gifts with His flock in the coming year.

Two Words From the Library

1. Devotions - The church library is blessed with
MANY books that are devotional material. Specifically Dewey Decimal System: 242 - turn left as you enter. The shelves are labeled Devotional Lit. (Top three shelves)
- Also Easter and Lent related books will be on the check-in table under the bulletin board on the left of the table.

2. UMW Reading Program books for 2010 are on the right of the check-in table. Some eligible books from former years are in the middle. If you have not already counted them, they can be read and counted as far back as 2005. All are labeled as to category and year. If you read at least 4 per year, you and our unit get credit. A few more are on order for 2010. Start now and get your pick? Check out just like an ordinary library book and keep a list to turn in next November. Thanks.

March - Brain Injury

“I will give you a wise and understanding mind such as no one else has ever had or ever will have!” I Kings 3:12 NLT

Week 3

If your child plays a sport, be aware of the risk for a head injury. All athletes, parents, and coaches should understand the severity that can accompany a head or neck injury. Make sure all players wear the appropriate protective gear for the sport. If an injury occurs, carefully observe the player for signs of a concussion (severe headaches, extreme sleepiness, vomiting, seizures, leg/arm weakness, increasing confusion, or slurred speech). Don’t allow the player to return to play until he/she has been evaluated and released. A second impact to an injured brain can cause serious and potentially permanent damage. Benched for a game is better than being benched for life.

Week 4
“Though he stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD upholds him with his hand. Psalm 37:24 NIV
In the senior population, the majority of traumatic brain injures are contributed to falls because of problems with balance and vision. Some symptoms of brain injuries are similar to those of a stroke, so question the person about any recent falls or injuries when assessing a situation. To prevent falls, encourage the person to strengthen his/her gait through exercise. Assess the home for safety issues; remove throw rugs, install grab bars in the bathroom, and check for adequate lighting. Check medications for side effects of confusion which might result in a fall. Safety measures are important for the prevention of brain injury.
