“Self-Denial”
In Lent we hear much about denying self and following God. This is easier said than done. Overindulgence can be a sin of destruction. What do you enjoy? What gets the most of your time and energy? Some people fall into the trap of workaholism. If they work harder they will earn more. Jesus challenged His disciples to think less of self, and more of others. Only if we were willing to become servants would we understand the fulfillment of life’s meaning and purpose.

How about you? Are you willing to serve, or do you just expect to be served? God cares about you. God wants us to be servants who are willing to sacrifice the desires and needs of self to help others. How are you doing in this regard? Overindulgence can bring physical destruction and emotional turmoil. Come and be challenged by the words of Jesus.

                                               In Christ,

Time To Spring Ahead

Start cleaning out those closets, basements and attics. The youth will be hosting their White Elephant Sale on Saturday, April 14. You may bring items to the church anytime AFTER the UMW Spring Fashion Show on March 24.

“The Climate Project” Forum
On Wednesday, March 14, at 6:30pm in the library, Randy Hudson will present a forum on global warming through an organization called “The Climate Project.” The information and challenges included in this program echo those in Al Gore’s movie “An Inconvenient Truth,” a look at the causes, results of, and prospects for global warming in our lifetime and that of our children and grandchildren. The question: How can we become proactive in addressing the issues involved in the global warming crisis?

Mr. Hudson’s presentation will include visual information conveying changes that are already occurring in the climate, the reasons for the changes, and what steps are needed to reduce the impact of global warming. If you are interested in learning more about this critical issue in our world today, you will not want to miss this informative forum.

Chancel Choir Joins College-Community Choir
The Chancel Choir will join with the alumni choir at Maryville College for a farewell concert in Wilson Chapel in May. During the next few months, the choir will sing selections included on that concert. The music has been arranged in each service of worship to support the theme of Rev. Moore’s sermon and scripture text. More information will follow concerning the May concert.

Anyone wishing to join the choir and participate in this tribute to the musical heritage of Maryville College and its impact on our community is invited to rehearsals on Wednesday evenings at 7:30pm in the Choir room on the fourth elevator level. The May concert will be the last event in Wilson Chapel before it is torn down to begin construction of the new College-Community Fine Arts Center jointly supported by Maryville College and the cities of Alcoa and Maryville.

Sunday’s Anthem Features Spiritual
Houston Bright, in his 1950 arrangement of the African-American spiritual, I Hear a Voice a-Prayin’, portrays a sinner praying that the Lord will “save-a my soul.” The bass section repeats a driving rhythmic line while the other three voices chime in as the voices of other people praying. With all its energy and drive, the end of the piece is quite a surprise.
