May 15, 2007                                           Volume 3, Number 17

“Now You See Me, Now You Don’t”  Jesus knew He would ascend into heaven, and He wanted the disciples to be ready for life without His presence. He wanted them to know that they were bound together by faith, linked together by a drive to restore the broken to wholeness, and to seek and save the lost. Jesus had brought hope, and He wanted this message of hope and love to be carried to the world.

We may be separated from those we love and respect, but we must continue to serve faithfully and loyally. Jesus asked for obedience to the Will and Way of God. Love one another as God has loved you. Establish the Kingdom of God on earth. We wonder where God is at times. We would welcome a clear call and vision.

Sunday we will look at the Ascension. Jesus departed to return to heaven. He has promised to return. Are you linked to Jesus, or have you fallen into the trap of out of sight, and out of mind? Come and discover the presence of God now.

                                               In Christ,

Special Offering For Brazil
This Sunday, May 20, we will take a special offering to benefit "Living God's Dream"-our ongoing mission work in Brazil. The goal of the Holston Conference is to raise $100,000. Our offering will be brought to Annual Conference in June and Broadway will receive Conference Advance Special credit. We have a wonderful video regarding the work of the United Methodist church in Brazil and will show it to you at our worship services this Sunday.

Choir Sings Mozart Sunday
This Sunday, the Chancel Choir will sing Mozart’s moving motet, “Jesu, Word of God Incarnate,” during 10:30am worship. The words that Mozart chose for this memorable motet help us remember the events of Holy Week as we prepare for the wondrous ascension of Jesus. The story of Easter is not complete without “page 2.” We remember Jesus’ sacrifice as he came into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, ate the Passover feast with His disciples, was betrayed, tried, and crucified on Good Friday, rose from the dead on Easter, ascended into Heaven on Ascension Day, and sent the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. That is the story, the whole story, of Easter. Today, as we celebrate the ascension of Jesus, we remember the sacrifices that made this day possible. “Jesus, Word of God Incarnate”: Jesus, God dwelling among us.

Let’s Have Lunch At The Buttercup Tearoom

Following lunch we will see what is new in the Cranberry Hollow gift shop. Each person will order from the menu and pay for their own lunch. Upon returning home we will collect money for the bus. If you would like to join the fun, sign-up today! Registration forms are ONLINE at broadwayumc.net

Liberian Missionaries Herbert and Mary Zigbuo Speak  So you want to know who our global missionaries are and what they are doing. Well, come to the Wednesday Fellowship Supper this Wednesday, May 23, and find out first hand. Broadway supports Herbert and Mary Zigbuo in their ministry in the Department of General Education and Ministry in Liberia. Herbert serves as Director and Mary serves as Program Director. They spend 60% of their time “on the road.” During the rainy season, they cannot reach some of the bush villages, so they can only go there during the dry season. Any travel in Liberia is treacherous at best. The Zigbuos were refugees in Guinea during the most recent uprising, but are now back in Ghanta, their present base of operations. What is it like to be a missionary in a region where just living is precarious? Learn how God has blessed their ministry and what impact our Maryville District school kits will have on the life of the children the Zigbuos live with every day.

Menu: Roast beef, mashed potatoes, green beans, salad, rolls and dessert. Reservations must be in by noon on Monday.

UMW To Chattanooga
Ladies, mark your calendar for a mission trip to Chattanooga. We will be going to the Bethlehem Community Center on June 30 and learn about their work in the southside area of Chattanooga, leaving the church by bus at 8:30 a.m. We will have lunch at the Gallery Café at 12:30 p.m. This is a tearoom in an Antique Mall.

The Bethlehem Community Center is one of Holston Conference’s agencies and receives funds for their work in an after school program similar to the Wesley House Community Center in Knoxville. We will be taking some items to help them in this program. Items needed are notebook paper, pencils, magic markers, crayons, erasers, and/or a story book.

After lunch we will have some free time before heading home. Please mark your calendar for June 30 and plan to be with us. Watch the Messenger for information about making reservations for this trip.

Summer Trip to Amish Country and Lancaster Play  Plan to enjoy a day in the Amish country in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and see a play at the Millennium Theatre in Ronks.

The trip is planned for Tuesday, June 26, through Thursday, June 28. The group will spend the morning and early afternoon at the Kitchen Kettle, an Amish historical area in Intercourse, PA, where shopping abounds and museums of Amish life thrive. There is a quilting museum across from the visitors’ center and plenty of food sampling centers to make quite a lunch. One could even take a buggy ride with an Amish family. In the afternoon, we will go to the Sight and Sound Theatre to see “In the Beginning,” a musical play about God’s creation of the world. Following the show, the group will eat a sumptuous feast at the Bird-in-Hand Restaurant.

Dates To Put On Your Calendar
