Come Celebrate With Us

What a journey! Weeks ago we started the Season of Lent and we joined others in Holston Conference in committing to 40 Days of Prayer. Throughout these days we prayed for ourselves in our own relationship and walk with Christ, but we also prayed specifically for those people who weren’t connected to God. Lent led us into a powerful celebration of Easter! Throughout this Season of Easter, we have moved into what Harry Denman, well known United Methodist evangelist of past years, called “The 50 Golden Days of Evangelism.” In these past 50 days we have been challenged and stretched to become “Contagious” in our Faith. We have had 11 small groups meeting with about 60 people considering weekly questions about our weekly worship topic. In addition, we have had about 160 daily email devotions going out with scriptures, prayers, practical evangelism tips and thought-provoking readings. A great deal of appreciation needs to be shared liberally around with the hard-working, passionate Evangelism team, the small group hosts and participants, the communications folks and all of you who are continuing to come, listen, open yourself and explore what it might mean in your life to have “Contagious Faith!” Special thanks to Stan Turner for countless hours gathering, formatting, editing and emailing all of our past 90 days worth of devotions!

Sometimes we spend so much time at church doing the work of the church that we forget to take time to slow down and celebrate. That’s what this coming weekend is for. This Sunday is Pentecost Sunday. We will join with churches around the world in celebrating the birthday of the Church and the gift of the Holy Spirit. We will join with churches across Holston in celebrating baptisms. We were challenged in February to do all of the ground work so that when the day of Pentecost came, we wouldn’t just be looking back to remember what had happened, but rather, we have been praying and preparing to have another day of Pentecost when the Spirit of God moves in mighty ways. This Sunday, May 23rd at 10 a.m. join me for a day of CELEBRATION! This will not be business as usual. Baptisms, new faith and membership commitments, the entire congregation joined as one – with all of our special invited guests! This Sunday, come to be filled to overflowing with joy and assurance of God’s work in the world...and in our church. We’ll get back to all of the business and busy-ness of our next week...but on the day of Pentecost, we will all assemble together in one place!

Read Acts 2 and Get Ready! See you Sunday at 10!

                            Shalom,

Fill the Food Buckets for Africa

This is a reminder that Broadway has 30 food buckets to fill for the 2010 Holston Annual Conference Hands-On Mission Project to Liberia and Zimbabwe. The progress so far is very exciting! To make it easy for you, there are boxes at each entrance to the church that are labeled for Food Bucket Donations. Just drop your food items in the boxes, and the Mission team will pack the buckets later. You have all the month of May to help with this project.

Food Items Needed:
5 lb. bags of corn meal
2 lb. bags of dried beans
5 lb. bags of sugar
2 lb. bags of rice
small boxes of Splenda
48 oz. bottles of cooking oil
boxes of regular tea bags
2 lb. canned hams (2 1-lb. hams or 1 2-lb. ham)
5 lb. bags of self-rising flour
9 oz. or smaller boxes of powdered milk
$5 to cover shipping of each bucket is also needed

Picnic Is Coming

The FRINS group will have their year end picnic at Louisville Point Park on Wednesday, May 26. We will meet at the church at 11:00 a.m. and take the church bus to the park. Lunch will be at about noon. Drinks, plates etc will be furnished. Please bring a covered-dish or two to share.

Come to VBS 2010

and get ready for adventures on the High Seas as we set sail through God’s Word!

The dates for Vacation Bible School (VBS) are Tuesday, June 22-Friday, June 25th with a wrap up party at Camp Wesley Woods on Saturday for the whole family to enjoy. Times are 5:30-8:15 p.m. A supper/snack will be served from 5:30-6:00 p.m. Preschool up to 6th grade are invited to set sail and enjoy the fun at VBS!

Something different that we are doing this year that is VERY important for planning and budgeting purposes is, we really need you to register BEFORE the start of VBS. Please register your children by Sunday, June 13th. There are tables set up in the Children’s Department and in the narthex at the back of the sanctuary with a pre-registration list and health forms. You may also register on line at www.broadwayumc.net Then look under the children’s page for “VBS”. Health forms may be brought the first night (unless your child has allergies, then we would need to know those ahead of time for meal planning).

This High Sea Adventure will teach our children that: God’s word is true.
God’s word is comforting.
God’s word is surprising.
God’s word is life-changing.
Last but not least...if you have any Nautical items that can be used for props or decorations we would love to borrow them. (They will need to be tagged by you with your name.) Anything will help with our decorating budget...captain’s hats, fish, nets, nautical pictures, light houses etc...You can put them on the stage in the fellowship hall.

Thank you and we look forward to seeing you at VBS on our High Seas adventure!

Any questions, contact Alice Croft, 984-2482, Kathleen Gersh, 984-7720, or Charlie Wimmer, 607-0068.

VBS Wrap-up Party

Join us at Camp Wesley Woods on Saturday, June 26 from 11:00-4:00 p.m. for our VBS wrap-up party and family fun day. Lunch will be served at the gazebo at 12:00, then you are welcome to swim, hike or just enjoy the fellowship of friends. We will provide the hot dogs but ask that you bring side items to go with the dogs.

And It Came to Pass...

The second chapter of Luke, in the King James Version, begins “And it came to pass...” My children have long known that this is my favorite passage, and it appears numerous times in the Bible. It tells me that nothing stays the same forever except God; our lives our constantly changing.

When we started working on our Church Directory in November, 2008, I foolishly thought it would be no more that a 6 month project. Little did I know! What I now know is that we have a wonderful, up-dated directory with more information that we could have imagined and we have had many people step up to make this happen. This is an awesome congregation with dedicated, caring servants of God who so generously give of their time, talents, and finances to see that things do “come to pass” when we all work together to accomplish a common goal. Thank you to each and every one who had a part in this project, even if it was only coming to have your picture taken. It takes all of us to make Broadway a place to worship God. Again, I thank you for your patience and prayers through the past months as we celebrate the “New Church Directory!”

Directories my be picked up on the tables located around the church. There are directories in the binders and loose pages for those who have a binder.

Church Picnic On Pentecost Sunday

To celebrate the birthday of the Church, we are having a church picnic at Louisville Point Park after the combined church service on Sunday, May 23. We will gather around the park pavilion at 11:45 a.m. Each family is asked to bring their own place settings, napkins, cups and a dish to share. The committee will provide drinks and ice. You may also want to bring chairs and/or a blanket though some picnic tables will be available. Please join us to celebrate this important day in church history and to enjoy fun and fellowship with the Broadway family. Dress is informal for worship so you are comfortable for the picnic. We will take the bus following the Asbury run if there is enough interest.

Directions to Louisville Point Park: Take the 129 bypass to Walmart and turn onto the Louisville Road beside Walmart. Drive about 5 miles until you see St. Mark’s UMC on the left. Turn right on the next road after St. Mark’s. You will see a sign that says “Louisville Point” just before the road. Follow the road into the park; the pavilion is on the right.

Travels to Townsend

Our Odyssey group will travel to Townsend on Thursday, May 27. We will leave the church at 11:30 to have lunch at Miss Lily’s Cafée. We will order from the menu and each pay for our own meal. Following lunch we will go to the Great Smoky Mountain Heritage Center. The price will be $3.00 or $4.00 each. (Depending if we have enough for the group rate.) If you have a membership use it. There have been several new displays added at the center. You will want to see the church which was added this spring. Upon our return we will collect money for gas. We should be back to the church by 4:00 p.m. Please make reservations in the church office by Monday, May 24.

Handicap Parking

In an effort to make the church more accessible during our Sunday morning worship services, the Administrative Board would like to designate the parking spaces next to the kitchen door as reserved for persons with acute mobility issues. Instead of placing signs or marking the pavement, we will use the honor system. If you or a family member uses a wheelchair or walker, please feel free to park in the area near the kitchen door on Sunday mornings. Thank you.

Congratulations to the First Place Team of Pete Headrick, Art Hafner, Deb Husk, & Susanne Martin.

Second Place went to the Team of Bo Henry, Robert Russell, & Larry Martin.

Closest to the pin was won by John Jelinski.
Longest Drive was won by Bo Henry.

A final note: The undefeated Champion Team of the Women’s Division was unable to compete in this tournament because of travel and other commitments. However, the two women who were able to play were on the winning team. Coincidence?

Again, thank you so much for your support. We’ll see you’ll at the Fall 2010 Tournament.
