“Feel
The Breath Of God”
Pentecost is a time in which God kept His promise to send
the counselor and guide to direct our lives. When we receive the Holy
Spirit the power of God can energize our actions and give us life. The
Hebrew word for spirit means “breath.” The presence of God can be as
close as our next breath. This breath gives us the power by which to
live.
The church became a vital factor after Pentecost. The church became
energized to win souls by the redeeming power of Jesus Christ. When the
church spends too much time on personal ethics and social action to the
neglect of bringing persons to God it loses some of its strength and
energy. Pentecost was a time fo conversion, repentance, confirmation,
and baptism - not only baptism by water, but baptism of the Holy Spirit.
Come and receive a blessing. Come and enjoy Pentecost with us at
Broadway. Spirit means “breath.” Let us breathe with the power of
Christ.
In Christ,

A Note Of Caution
It has been noticed that several people in recent months have written
checks to the church in pencil. This is not a good practice and the
banks frown on it. For your own protection, please use ink when writing
checks.
Broadway Breakfast
The Broadway Breakfast Group will have their monthly gathering at 9:00
a.m., Saturday, June 2, at the Airport Hilton. This is a time each month
for friends and members of Broadway church to get together for fun, food
and fellowship. If you would like to make a reservation to attend,
contact Judy in the church office, 982-6192.
Church Office Closed
The church office will be closed Monday, May 28, in celebration of
Memorial Day.
Welcome
To Galilee By-the-Sea In just a few short weeks,
our church will be filled with children and families seeking fun and
adventure at our Galilee By-the-Sea VBS! They’ll be worshiping God
through songs and prayer, making projects, and discovering life-changing
Bible truths in fun and memorable ways.
To have the best adventure possible, we need lots of volunteers who can
give some time, energy, and love to the kids and families who will
attend. Here are a few ideas about ways you might be able to make this
program a success. Please check out the following list, then pray about
where God might use you: Contact Jenny Ottinger or Charlie Wimmer.

Project Crossroad Mission Trip
When: Wednesday, June 13-Saturday, June 16
Where: Marion, VA
Cost: Free. Most food will be provided
It will be hot, we will be tired and dirty, but we will be helping someone that
needs us. Project Crossroad is a mission organization directed by Holston
minister, Harry Howe. Broadway has been supporting this mission for 15 years.
Located in Marion, Virginia, Crossroads shares the love of God, house by house.
We have built porches and ramps, added bathrooms, painted and done demolition,
and it is clearly remembered something about a flooded basement!! It is a hard
three days, but very rewarding and fulfilling.
In the past I have noticed it is not only the homes that are improved by our
work, the youth and leaders have always come away changed as well. There is
something good about doing for others!
Registrations are due on Sunday, June 3. There will also be a pre-trip meeting
that night.
Charlie
Choir Sings Pentecost/Memorial Day Anthem
This Sunday, the Chancel Choir will sing Hal Hopson’s rousing
setting of a Scottish paraphrase of Isaiah 2:2-6. In the text the writer avows
that as the breath of the Holy Spirit descends upon God’s people, God also
blesses his people with the hope of a new world. “No longer hosts encountering
hosts shall crowds of slain deplore; they hang the trumpet in the hall and study
war no more.” On a Sunday when we celebrate both a special Christian Holy Day,
Pentecost, and a national holiday, Memorial Day, sometimes it is difficult to
find litanies, readings, hymns, and anthems that speak to both celebrations.
However, Hal Hopson has successfully joined these two celebrations so that we
can hail the festive day of the birth of the church, the descent of the Holy
Spirit, and those who have fallen in service to their country. Although the
United Methodist Church does not condone war as the best means to address our
differences with other nations and cultures, we, nevertheless, commemorate the
lives of those who have fought and died for the freedoms that we enjoy today.
A Great Big “Thank You” From Broadway Methodist Men The
Broadway UMM would like to thank each and everyone that helped make our Spring
Golf Tournament a success. Naturally, we want to thank the golfers that played
because without you, there would be no tournament. A special thanks for braving
the weather as you could have easily dropped out and not played.
Our much appreciated Hole Sponsors and Individual Sponsors... Bob and Lil
Tiebout, Bob and Judy Hayes, Dan and Margaret Moore, Iver and Ina Moredock,
Susanne and Larry Martin, Leon and Kerry Trundle, Deb and Mike Husk, Tom and
Mary Louise Brown, Bob and Carol Ergenbright, Joe and Jill Fox, Mary P.
Anderson, Jeanne and Al Redwine, Angel and Dr. Kim Norman, Jack and Lana Parham,
Dr. Newsom Baker, Robert and Patsy Russell, Dot and John Pappas, Bob and Marie
Harris, Broadway United Methodist Women, Potpourri Sunday school class, Youth in
the Way, Drexel and Barbara Tiller, Bill and Genny Pope, Kevin and Lisa
Teffeteller, Jane Roberson, Rick and Nancy Ayres ....for without your support,
we would be unable to give to the scholarship fund and to other needed projects.
Also we want to thank those that donated to the golfers “goodie bags” and to the
door prizes. First Tennessee Bank, Sun Trust Bank, The Green Bank (formerly
American Fidelity Bank), CVS Pharmacy, Atlanta Bread Co., Edwin Watts Golf,
Dale’s Winning Edge, Maryville Police Department, Asbury Place and Bob and Lil
Tiebout.
Again, thanks ...as we are grateful to all.

UMW To

in this program. Items needed are notebook paper, pencils, magic markers,
crayons, erasers, and/or a story book.
After lunch we will have some free time before heading home. Please mark your
calendar for June 30 and plan to be with us. Watch the Messenger for information
about making reservations for this trip.
