The weekly newsletter of Broadway United Methodist Church

May 29, 2007                                           Volume 3, Number 19

“Are You A Blessing?"
Jesus knew the central problem in the lives of the disciples was not lack of faith, but lack of action. Do you have faith in Christ Jesus? Do you find it difficult to act? Jesus wants us to make a difference where we can. He wants us to be a blessing. Too many today want to be blessed, but they are reluctant to step forward and provide a blessing for others. Jesus has empowered us to be a blessing.

Sunday we will look at becoming a blessing in God’s kingdom. There are those out in the world who need love, mercy, and grace to be extended to them. When we practice God’s love, then others will learn by example. Give of your best to the service of Jesus. Be a blessing!

                                               In Christ,

Broadway Breakfast
The Broadway Breakfast Group will have their monthly gathering at 9:00 a.m., Saturday, June 2, at the Airport Hilton. This is a time each month for friends and members of Broadway to get together for fun, food and fellowship. If you would like to make a reservation, contact Judy in the church office, 982-6192.

Choir Camp Coming
Put on your singing cap and your dancing shoes for Children’s Choir Camp, June 20-22. This year we will sing the songs of Scandinavia and also some Charles Wesley hymns. Charles Wesley composed over 9,000 hymns, many of which are in the United Methodist Hymnal. Learn about the Stave Church; learn about the children of Scandinavia; learn about Methodism in those countries; and learn about our Methodist tradition of singing our faith.

Last Call for Lancaster, PA, Trip
The trip to Lancaster, PA, to see the show “In the Beginning” and tour the Amish countryside is almost full. There are three seats left on the bus. Get your reservation in NOW if you want to go on this exciting trip. Call the office to reserve your place today.

Welcome To Galilee By-the-Sea  In just a few short weeks, our church will be filled with children and families seeking fun and adventure at our Galilee By-the-Sea VBS! They’ll be worshiping God through songs and prayer, making projects, and discovering life-changing Bible truths in fun and memorable ways.

To have the best adventure possible, we need lots of volunteers who can give some time, energy, and love to the kids and families who will attend. Here are a few ideas about ways you might be able to make this program a success. Please check out the following list, then pray about where God might use you: Contact Jenny Ottinger or Charlie Wimmer.

Project Crossroad Mission Trip
When: Wednesday, June 13-Saturday, June 16
Where: Marion, VA
Cost: Free. Most food will be provided

It will be hot, we will be tired and dirty, but we will be helping someone that needs us. Project Crossroad is a mission organization directed by Holston minister, Harry Howe. Broadway has been supporting this mission for 15 years. Located in Marion, Virginia, Crossroads shares the love of God, house by house. We have built porches and ramps, added bathrooms, painted and done demolition, and it is clearly remembered something about a flooded basement!! It is a hard three days, but very rewarding and fulfilling.

In the past I have noticed it is not only the homes that are improved by our work, the youth and leaders have always come away changed as well. There is something good about doing for others!

Registrations are due on Sunday, June 3. There will also be a pre-trip meeting that night.

We Need Your Help For VBS!
If it’s been a while since you’ve been to Vacation Bible School, now’s your chance to join this new ministry. This year’s VBS program requires participation from all generations. Help us recreate a bustling marketplace with your presence. Come assist for 1 night, 2 nights or all week. Visit, catch up and join your friends as you help set the environment of a seaside village. We’ll need extra hands with crafts, bread baking, and lots of smiles. You will help spread the good news of Jesus and His latest sightings. Come help us bring the Bible to life and learn something new!

Please let Jennie Ottinger, Rebecca Brown, or Charlie Wimmer know how you can serve your church and community by leading a portion of the program or supporting the teams in place. Remember a 5 night commitment is not required, but spend at least 1 night with us and watch God work in powerful ways. Thank you in advance for making this vision a reality.

Thanks,
Jennie Ottinger

Children’s Choir Camp Goes “Staving”
What is a stave church? Come to Children’s Choir Camp, June 20-22, and learn about the Scandinavian stave church, how it is built, what kind of worship is used, and what songs are sung. Registrations may be made through the church office, Charlie Wimmer, or Bob Ergenbright. For more information, see the children’s summer activities brochure available at various places in the church, or go online to our website and select children’s ministries for information and registration forms.

Music for Sunday Worship
This Sunday the Chancel Choir will sing “Who Is He?”, a Don Besig arrangement of the Communion Liturgy. Mr. Besig and his wife, who helped with the text, have taken the Maundy Thursday account and expanded it to include the modern setting of the Wesley Holy Communion Service. The anthem concludes with the affirmation, “We will walk in faith and follow Him.”
