The American Heritage Dictionary defines nurture, as follows: nur-tured, nur-tur-ing, nur-tures. 1. To nourish; feed. 2. To educate; train. 3. To help grow or develop; cultivate: nurture a student's talent.
To find a more spiritual meaning of the word, we find the following words in John 21:15-17 (RSV):
When they had finished
breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter,
"Simon, son of John, do you love me more than
these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I
love you." He said to him,
"Feed my lambs." A second
time He said to him,
"Simon, son of John, do you love me?"
He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him,
"Tend my sheep." He said to
him the third time,
"Simon, son of John, do you love me?"
Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, "Do you love me?" And
he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." Jesus
said to him,
"Feed my sheep."
Nurturing is a unique word in that it sums up what the many ministries and the people of Broadway are all about. It more than adequately describes our mission here, and who we as a church family. Nurturing: to do as Jesus commanded of Simon..."Feed my sheep." Below are just a few examples of the nurturing that we endeavor to accomplish here, but there are many more. We encourage you to take a look at each one to see where you may either be spiritually fed, or where you can offer your gifts and talents to help to feed others. Further, since this is just a partial listing, we invite you to visit other pages within our website, or better yet, come and be part of our celebration of Christ here at Broadway.
