SERMONS WE SEE
I'd rather see a sermon than hear one any day, I'd rather one should walk with me than merely show the way. The eye's a better pupil and more will- ing than the ear; Fine counsel is confusing, but ex- ample's always clear; And the best of all the preachers are the men who live their creeds, For to see the good in action is what everybody needs. I can soon learn how to do it if you'll let me see it done. I can watch your hands in action, but your tongue too fast may run. And the lectures you deliver may be very wise and true; But I'd rather get my lessons by observ- ing what you do. For I may misunderstand you and the high advice you give, But there's no misunderstanding how you act and how you live!

Witness Ministries and "witnessing" has evolved and has come to mean many things to many different people today. As Christians, every person is a minister, and as such, we are called to communicate our faith individually, in a style that fits each one of us. A simple example of witnessing can be found in sharing a faith story that distinguishes your own Christian experience.
Witnessing is "Faith In Action" as you will find demonstrated through our "Outreach Ministry" It is demonstrated in the communications and marketing of our faith via the content of our church publications to the rest of the world community, through our church newsletter, and even through this website. It could encompass knocking on doors, or anything that we do to organize, and to get Christ's message of love and salvation into our home communities and throughout the world.
Witnessing is also projected in how we as Christians carry ourselves in our daily living. The poem by Edgar A. Guest, "Sermons We See" perfectly illustrates our calling as witnesses for Christ and our faith, not only as Methodists, but more importantly, as Christians.
Part and parcel of being a "Witness" for Christ involves following through by "going out into the world and making disciples." It is being able to understand who we are and where we are in Christ. Being able to understand our Spiritual Gifts and equally, being able to apply them both through our volunteerism here at Broadway and in ministering to the un-churched in our society. To assist you, we offer a Spiritual Gifts Assessment Tool along with a List of the Spiritual Gifts as outlined in the scriptures. Then Jesus said to all the people: If any of you want to be my followers, you must forget about yourself. You must take up your cross each day and follow me. Luke 9:23 CEV |
